MediaTek Aims to Challenge Qualcomm with Exclusive Samsung Deal for Dimensity 9400

February 4, 2024

In a bid to take on industry-heavyweight Qualcomm, Taiwanese semiconductor manufacturer MediaTek is gearing up to introduce its latest chipset, the Dimensity 9400. While the company has been successful in attracting orders from various Android phone makers, rumors suggest that MediaTek’s strategic move may involve securing a groundbreaking deal with Samsung, the world’s largest Android phone maker.

According to insider information shared by tipster Revegnus, MediaTek is reportedly offering Samsung an exclusive discount to encourage the adoption of its chipsets, particularly in the upcoming budget-friendly smartphone models. Given Samsung’s dominance in the Android market and its recent displacement by Apple as the world’s leading smartphone brand, a partnership with Samsung could significantly boost MediaTek’s market share and open doors for lucrative future collaborations.

The current speculation indicates that Samsung may not immediately embrace MediaTek’s forthcoming Dimensity 9400, slated to be mass-produced on TSMC’s second-generation 3nm process, similar to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 4. Samsung has already inked an agreement with Qualcomm to utilize its next-generation chipsets for the upcoming Galaxy S25 family. However, the dynamics of this arrangement could shift, given the potential advantages MediaTek offers.

With Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 estimated to cost around $200 per System-on-Chip (SoC) and the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 rumored to be more expensive than its predecessor, Samsung faces a dilemma in maintaining profit margins. MediaTek, with its competitive pricing strategy and the upcoming Dimensity 9400, emerges as a viable alternative. Samsung could weigh the cost-effectiveness of MediaTek’s offerings against the expense of fabricating its own Exynos range of SoCs, potentially leading to a strategic shift in its chipset partnerships.

While the Dimensity 9400 might not be the immediate focus for Samsung, MediaTek aims to initiate this potential collaboration incrementally. The company is reportedly considering offering price cuts on low-end silicon, possibly for its existing Dimensity 9300 and other budget-friendly chipsets, as a preliminary step toward establishing a closer partnership with Samsung.

In the fast-paced and competitive semiconductor industry, MediaTek’s efforts to secure a significant deal with Samsung could reshape the landscape, challenging Qualcomm’s dominance and providing Android users with more diverse and affordable chipset options in their smartphones. The industry awaits official announcements and developments as MediaTek and Samsung navigate this potential collaboration in the coming months.
