Xiaomi is well known and does not need a special introduction. As for the Xiaomi Router 4Q, it belongs to the new, fourth family of Xiaomi routers. It was first to introduce on June 16, 2018, its a budget version of Xiaomi Router 4, released a month earlier. In contrast to version 4, 4Q has fewer antennas (3 versus 4), less RAM (64MB vs. 128MB) and does not have an effective range of 5 GHz.

The router came in a box of standard Xiaomi design. The whole text is in Chinese. Internally, the placement is somewhat thought-out – wrapped in transport packaging made of translucent polyethylene. The router rests on a paper tab with “wave” ornamentation, as if meeting a buyer. The rest of the delivery kit is under this tab. In addition to the router, there was only a charger with a US plug and a brief instruction in Chinese. Directly the router itself. There are no indicators. Only a large button with the inscription “MI” in the middle (this button is designed to connect smart Xiaomi devices quickly). The overall dimensions of the router are 20 x 13.5 x 2.6 cm. When you start the application, you are asked to register your account or log into your existing account. You need an account in order to be able to monitor the status of the router and manage its settings through the application or go directly to set up the router. Xiaomi Router 4Q can work either in base station mode or in access point mode (wired or wireless). When connected in base station mode, the application has independently determined the type of external connection (PPPoE), offered to enter the login and password to it and configure the WiFi access settings.
The connection in the wired or wireless access point mode differs only in that in case of wireless connection. It is necessary to select the WiFi network and enter its password, and in the second case, the wire connection gets the check. At the last stage, you will need to specify the password for the router. As for the Mi Wi-Fi application itself, it can be use to monitor the overall network load and connected devices. There is a very convenient function for checking the connection speed between the router and the Internet, and between the device and the router, available the function of automatic optimization of settings.
The testing and optimization functionality is also available in the Plugins tab. Here you can also control the Firewall, the settings of the router, as well as additional tools, the truth not all are functions are working(depends on the model of the router). The Xiaomi Router 4Q can be configure not only through the application. But also in the traditional way via the cable at the address indicated on the label. The only problem is that the web interface is entirely in Chinese. Of course, you can intuitively adjust, the benefit is the picture, allowing you to understand what it’s about. However, in any case, through the application is much more convenient.
As you can see, the results are approximately similar, except for the most remote point. Here, the 4Q test is better, which indicates a greater “long range” of this router.
Otherwise, the Wavlink functionality is better as compare to the other older model – Xiaomi Router 4. Both these routers support the 5 GHz network, but Xiaomi LAN ports have 1 Gbit, and Wavlink has only 100 Mbit. However, Wavlink has a USB port. The reason for this difference in configuration is obviously of a technical nature. Since the earlier Xiaomi Router 3 is similar to Wavlink in terms of performance.
Several strains are in Chinese in the firmware, but this is a fee for the relatively low cost of the router. In any case, the international version would be worth more. Moreover, this problem can be circumvent with the help of the application.
The quick connection function of smart Xiaomi Router 4Q devices via the “Mi” button is a definite plus for those who use such devices. However, unfortunately, it was not possible to test it due to the lack of such devices.
