Last year on November 4, Xiaomi president, Lin Bin announced two new smartphones for the entry-level market, the Xiaomi Redmi 4 and Xiaomi Redmi 4A. The former one was priced at 499 yuan (), while the Redmi 4A was announced at 699 yuan (5). However, their pricing was increased by 100 yuan later due to the increased purchase cost of components and exchange rate fluctuations. These models went on sale a week later, on the double 11 festival. Moreover, the Xiaomi Redmi 4A was considered as the most sold smartphone during the festival. On October 16, 2017, Xiaomi launched the sequel of this device dubbed as the Xiaomi Redmi 5A at 599 yuan ($90). Like its predecessor, this phone comes with a 5-inch 720p screen and a 3000mAh lithium battery promised to provide up to 8 days of life.
Xiaomi Redmi 5A Appearance
As for the box, it comes in traditional red color. I mean this color has become the distinguishing color for Redmi line packages. On the top, we can see the printed Redmi 5A information.
On the bottom, we can see a regular information concerning the current model. It includes a screen size, camera, battery capacity, and processor model.
The box is small itself, but it includes everything you need – a charger, data cable, pin, manual, and the phone itself.
Once the screen is lightened you can see the black frame around the screen. But if you remember, the Redmi 4 came with a wider frame, which was narrowed a bit later. The Xiaomi Redmi 5A’s frame is identical to the second-bunch models that have a border in less than 1mm.
When the phone hit TENAA, we learned it will come with a plastic housing, which is regular for smartphones from this category. But it uses a matte surface that provides a feeling of metal.
The left side carries a dual-SIM card slot supporting SIM + TF as well. Thus you can expand the memory up to 128GB.
The volume rocker and unlock button are on the right hand-side.
The top side comes with a microphone hole, infrared, and 3.5mm audio jack.
The bottom is still using a micro-UB interface, and there is another microphone hole as well.
Xiaomi Redmi 5A Performance
This is an entry-level smartphone that means the processor is not a selling point for it. But it shouldn’t be ignored as well. Especially, it’s not recommended for this phone, as it is packed with a Snapdragon 425 quad-core chip paired with a 2GB of RAM and 16GB of ROM.
Well, the Xiaomi Redmi 5A doesn’t meet the requirements of many benchmark tests such as PCMark and GFXBench GL. That’s why we’ll test it via other software – AnTuTu and Master Lu.
As you see in the screenshots below, the results are not very high. But they are still the way better than other entry-level smartphones packed with MediaTek SoCs.
In the second test, we want to understand how the phone behaves in real-life cases such as web browsing, viewing photos, etc. In this sense, the Xiaomi Redmi 5A showcases almost identical scores in comparison to the ZUK Z2 packed with a high-end Snapdragon 820. Honestly, the honor goes to the MIUI optimization.
We even tried to play King of Glory, and surprisingly it maintained 29fps, which is a great result for a 599 yuan smartphone.
Xiaomi Redmi 5A Camera
Before the launch of this handset, Xiaomi released another model from this family, the Redmi Note 5A. The latter came with a 16MP front shooter that made it the cheapest selfie-centric phone in the market. However, the Xiaomi Redmi 5A doesn’t come with so attractive front camera.
It is packed with a 5MP camera with an aperture of f/2.0, while there is a 13MP rear camera coming with a f/2.2 aperture. So do not expect more from this phone when it comes to shooting. However, let’s check out the real samples.
Though the resolution is pretty good, the photo color is not bright enough. Plus, the device is not able to regulate the white balance well.
Surprisingly, the Redmi 5A provides quite respectable night shooting mode. The noise control is very good. The camera tolerance is
Night shooting surprise, open the night shooting mode, the sky noise control is very good.
Finally, the front camera works with a Beautify app for better selfies. Judge yourself whether the correction is excessive.
Xiaomi Redmi 5A Battery
First, we tested the durability for watching videos online. The screen brightness was set at 24%, the movie has a 1080p resolution and 1:30:05 length. The phone’s initial power was remaining at 98%. After watching the whole movie, the power was 88%.
Second, we played King of glory for half an hour. The brightness was at 24%. When we started to test the power was 87%. Once it was over, the power was 80%.
As for the charging head, it supports 5V / 1A power. So let’s how it will help when charging the phone.
When we started charging there was remaining a power of 10%. So it took up to 197 minutes to charge the phone fully. This is regular for an entry-level smartphone, but a bit disappointing for a modern smartphone.
When talking about an entry-level smartphone, it’s difficult to mention one or two selling points. The Xiaomi Redmi 5A is no exception. But its price grabs customers’ attention successfully. However, the Redmi 5A is a good phone in many terms. Look, it comes with a Snapdragon chip, which is capable of providing stable performance. It is packed with a 3000mAh battery that provides up to 8 days of standby time. It runs on MIUI8 with tons of cool features. In this sense, 599 yuan is a great price tag. So we are sure the Xiaomi Redmi 5A will become one of the bestselling products during this Double 11 festival as well.
