Xiaomi Mi Band 3 Review: Everything Through Water Droplet

In 2014, Xiaomi announced the first-gen Mi Band. It was capable of providing some common features including the pedometer, alarm, and so on. It was priced at 79 yuan, which was an unheard pricing for a wearable. In 2016, the manufacturer came in with the Mi Band 2 with a built-in 0.42-inch screen and many enhanced features. It was sold for 149 yuan. So it turns out Xiaomi updates its smartband line every two years. So the launch of the third-gen Xiaomi Mi Band 3 on May 31 has been quite expected.

The Xiaomi Mi Band 3 comes with a larger screen in comparison to the second-gen model. It uses a 0.78-inch PMOLED display that is capable of displaying over 24 Chinese characters at a time and has a pixel density of 193ppi. This is the highest PPI custom display smartband on the market.

In addition to upgrading the display screen, the chip of the Mi Band 3 has been also been upgraded. So even it sports a larger and brighter screen, this product still can maintain the same battery life as the Mi Band 2. At the same time, our protagonist comes with straps that support 5ATM waterproof even when immersed in the water up to 50 meters. So unlike its predecessors, this one can be used when swimming, in the shower and other cases. The UV100 coating process was applied to the Mi Band 3, and the anti-fingerprint coating was applied to increase the wear resistance of the surface.

Moreover, the Xiaomi Mi Band 3 is divided into two versions. One is the standard version, while the second is the NFC version. As the name suggests, compared with the standard version, the NFC version comes with an NFC chip, which is suitable for NFC actions.

This product continues the Xiaomi products’ consistent high price/performance ratio, priced at 169 yuan.

Xiaomi Mi Band 3 Appearance

The Xiaomi Mi Band 3’s body is available in one color option only. It’s black. But there are three wristbands provided for replacement – graphite black, thermal orange, and deep blue.

The packaging is standard. Honestly, no one cares about it.

The main body has become glossier, using a liquid-like design. It is more rounded, tending to an elliptical shape. Thanks to it, we have a feeling like the information is displayed through a water droplet.

As we said, it sports a larger screen at 0.78 inches and 128 x 80 resolution. It’s a capacitive touchscreen. We have talked about the advantages of the PMOLED display in the Honor A2 review. In the middle, it is a non-pressable button that allows us to interact with the smartband via simple taps/touches.

Moreover, thanks to the screen refresh rate issues, the screen of the wristband may be flickering when shooting, which is normal.

It weighs about 8.5 grams. So you can wear it all day long.

The charging connectors are on the bottom. Compared with the traditional USB interface, the charging method eliminates the inconvenience caused by plugging and unplugging, and also saves valuable internal space.

The wristband design is identical to the Xiaomi Mi Band 2. It also uses skin-friendly materials, but the shape of the surface of the snap button is slightly different and the opening is larger.

The wristband of the Xiaomi Mi Band 3 uses a double-colored bite-synthetic type, which is very firm after being buckled. Plus, it has passed the ISO-10993-5/10 biocompatibility certification and European RoHS environmental certification and brings comfortable touch feeling. In order to prevent the main body from falling off, the wristband inner lining and the outer ring adopt a two-color occlusal technology. The wristband has a total of 12 length adjustments that can cover most users’ wrist types.

Xiaomi Mi Band 3 Experience

The improved functionality is the second selling point of the Xiaomi Mi Band 3.

Xiaomi Mi Band 3

The first eye-catching features in comparison to the second generation model are the ability to find the phone, lock the band’s screen, adjust the weather settings, etc.

Another new function is the memo-like reminder. Once you set reminders for this or that event, the Xiaomi Mi Band 3 will remind you about it even if your phone is far from it.

Xiaomi Mi Band 3

Of course, this product is capable of displaying all the common information such as time, steps count, distance passed, calorie consumption, and the remaining power. In this sense, you won’t find any differences in comparison to the previous models.

One of the most important upgrades for this handset is the addition of sports functions that make it possible to use the bracelet to perform the exercises independently, which is very convenient.

Xiaomi Mi Band 3

Once the Mi Band 3 is connected to the phone, the sports mode is turned on. So it will automatically enter the mobile interface and display the time and mileage synchronously with the smartphone. By pressing the button for a long time, the sports time can be closed synchronously, and the wristband can be controlled to eliminate the phone.

The Xiaomi Mi Band 3 has built-in 3-axis accelerometer. It supports Android 5.0 and iOS 9 and higher.

If you think the screen is too small to view and operate, you can also open the APP on your phone to view more detailed data.

It has been upgraded in terms of heart rate monitoring. During the exercise, if the heart rate is too fast and exceeds the set number, the bracelet will vibrate to alert the user.

Xiaomi Mi Band 3

The next amazing feature is the addition of the prompt content display. You can set the prompt software in the APP, such as receiving new messages, and it will display on the screen in real-time content.

In the Mi Band 2, you can use the phone to find the wearable, while the Xiaomi Mi Band 3 can now find the phone.

Xiaomi Mi Band 3 Battery

There is a built-in 110mAh battery, which is a real progress if compared to the Xiaomi Mi Band 2’s 70mAh battery. So though the screen has become larger, the endurance is not affected as the battery capacity has been improved as well.

When we were testing the Xiaomi Mi Band 3 the remaining power was 51%. After three days, it was dropped to 36%. Thus it consumes 5% per day. In this sense, the official information of 20 days is real.

Xiaomi Mi Band 3

We also tested the charging process. It charges 16% in 12 minutes. Thus, the Xiaomi Mi Band 3 can be fully charged in 75 minutes.

Conclusion

The Xiaomi Mi Band 3 may have been out of the definition of the smartband because, in the traditional definition, a band is not equipped with a screen, only the smartwatches are equipped with the screen display content. There is a trend to make wearable devices more user-friendly. So we can state the screen is one of the most important upgrades for Mi Band 3. We mean, the larger screen provides more functions. Moreover, it supports a wrist-up-wake feature. You can learn the information by raising your wrist. This method allows the user to concentrate on training.
