Xiaomi Mi A3 vs Redmi Note 7: what does each offer and which one is better buy?

The arrival of the new Xiaomi Mi A3 has not made everyone happy, despite being the third generation of the world’s best-selling Android One phone series. Guilt of this is the decision of Xiaomi to resort to a “low” resolution screen, and changes that do not represent a very obvious advance with respect to the last edition, however much the price of the device has remained fixed in the 249 euros that already cost the Mi A2, model with which we already compare this new model .

All this causes that, most likely, the Xiaomi Mi A3 will not have it easy to get to stand out from the great competition existing in the mid-range segment, and that is that even other Xiaomi models could hinder the ascent to the success of the new model with Android One, for offering an equally complete and balanced package, if not more, at a price similar or lower than the Mi A3.

This is the case of Redmi Note 7, one of the most popular models of the company launched in the first half of 2019, whose value for money remains difficult to match even for the rest of the brand’s models. But how is it compared to the Xiaomi Mi A3?

House design and screen differences

Xiaomi Mi A2 vs Redmi Note 7

The aesthetics of the last two mid-range Xiaomi models are practically identical. In both cases, we find devices built-in Gorilla Glass glass and aluminum, with similar sizes – something larger the Redmi Note 7 – and the same visual language. The back is led by the photographic system, more numerous in the case of the Mi A3, and in the case of the Redmi, we find a capacitive fingerprint reader, while the Mi A3 integrates it into the screen.

Speaking of the screen, it is necessary to highlight that, while the Redmi Note 7 has an IPS Full HD + panel 6.3 inches diagonally, the Mi A3 reduces both its size and resolution to 6.088 inches and an HD + resolution. This, coupled with the panel using OLED technology to include the integrated fingerprint reader, translates into less sharpness and clarity when displaying screen elements, due to the pentile pixel matrix used the panel.

For the rest, in neither of the two models, we find IP certification before water and dust, nor wireless charging. The detail that is not missing in either is the 3.5 mm headphone port, as well as the USB Type C.

Power jump and Android One as the main asset

The differences between both phones are not too significant if we talk about the technical section. From the Snapdragon 660 of the Redmi, we go to 665 of the Mi A3, which should be a slight improvement in energy consumption since the platform reduces its size to 11 nanometers. Beyond that, we have the possibility of choosing identical memory configurations in both models, since the Redmi Note 7 offers 3 or 4 GB of RAM and 32, 64 or 128 GB of expandable internal memory, while the Mi A3 only offers 4 GB of RAM and 64 or 128 GB of storage, also expandable.

Its batteries are also similar, with a difference of only 30 mAh in favor of the Mi A3 with respect to the 4,000 mAh of the Redmi. Therefore, I fear that in neither case will autonomy be a problem.

The main change, and probably the aspect that will lead most people to decide on one or the other lies in the software. Of course, the Xiaomi Mi A3 is part of the Android One initiative, so that its software hardly adds any more than pure Android, and it has secured system updates for a minimum of two years. The Redmi Note 7, meanwhile, uses MIUI, the Xiaomi Android-based operating system that brings most mobile phones that make up the Xiaomi catalog to life.

More sensors and more megapixels for the Mi A3

My A3, camera

Yes, the photographic systems of these two phones are more different. Both by a number of cameras –3 vs 2–, and by the proposal offered by each of them.

In both cases we found a 48-megapixel f / 1.8 sensor leading the back of the phones. However, the Mi A3 is accompanied by a secondary 8-megapixel wide-angle sensor, and a 2-megapixel secondary sensor responsible for capturing depth information. For its part, the Redmi Note 7 only has a secondary sensor of 5 megapixels, whose purpose is only to enable the background blur effect on images with portrait mode.

The front sensor is also different, being that of the Mi A3 of 32 megapixels, and that of the Redmi Note 7 of 13.

So … which one should I buy?

Redmi Note 7, screen

In the absence of the Xiaomi Mi A3 going through our test table, apparently, so far the Redmi Note 7 seems a smarter purchase than its relative with Android One.

The differences at the technical level are not significant, nor are the improvements in photography – after all, the main sensor remains the same – and we also find commitments with which we will have to learn to live together as the smallest screen resolution.

And if all the above was not enough, today it is possible to find the 4 + 64 GB configuration of the Redmi Note 7 at a price almost 80 euros lower than the Mi A3. So unless you’re not willing to buy a terminal with MIUI inside – if so, there are many other alternatives with Android One to the Mi A3, probably the Redmi model is a more recommended option for most.
