The Smartphone Market is very curious. Manufacturers do not want to stay off the podium when it comes to technology, but, at the same time, they want the largest number of customers to buy their latest model. Many times, this is not possible, so they choose to release multiple versions of a single terminal, with the intention of tailoring to more consumers. Xiaomi, a leading company in the sector, has incurred in this practice for a long time, and today we will help you get an idea of one of the company’s most recent Smartphones that, without being of the highest range, is approaching it. We are talking about the Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite, and as the name implies, it is a simpler version of the Xiaomi Mi 8, although all within a reasonable margin so that the essence of the original is maintained. Get to know it in detail in this review!

Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite review: Packaging
In the first instance, we will talk a little about its packaging. It is a rectangular-shaped box that has a gradient color. In the front area, you can see the Mi logo in a corner and in the center, we can see the version of the device.
In regards to the sides, they follow the same gradient tone with the name of Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite printed on them. We can also see a label that indicates that we are holding the global version of the smartphone.
On the back, there are the required warnings and legal information. It is a box formed by two pieces that close in vacuo.
Finally, the content of the package is as follows:
- Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite
- USB Charger Type-C QC3.0 – 5V / 2nd
- USB Type-C 3.0 cable
- USB-Type-C to Jack 3.5 mm converter accessory
- SIM tray removal tool
- Silicone case
Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite review: Construction and design
The Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite is quite traditional when it comes to design. It has a slim body with a build that mixes glass with a frame made of aluminum. The back is basically a crystal panel, where we can see the fingerprint scanner, the rear camera in a slightly protruding unit and some engravings. Although it looks spectacular, it is a fingerprint magnet, and although it is easy to clean, it is best to keep it in a case. Beyond that detail, the visual finish that leaves is quite impressive.
The front part, in addition to having a screen that occupies 82.5% of the useful area, boasts the so-called Notch; but this, unlike other similar terminals, is quite big for what it offers, although it’s not that bothersome.
As for the laterals, the right side has the power and volume buttons, while on the left side you can find a tray for a Nano-SIM and Micro SD card, or dual Nano-SIMs alternatively. The only input port is at the bottom, this being a USB Type-C, a detail that we must take into account for our headphones (an adapter is included in the box though).
Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite: Display
The Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite has opted for an IPS/LCD monitor that further reduce the cost of the device. With dimensions of 6.26 inches and Full HD+ resolution (2,280 x 1,080p), this screen enjoys excellent quality in all aspects.
The colors contrast very well, differentiating the light tones from the dark ones without any problem. The saturation is above average, getting results that look like a painting in watercolors, very rare in this type of technology. The brightness is sufficient, not losing visual quality when we are in the sun. In addition, the viewing angles are quite wide, so much so that we have not seen color change when looking at the screen from different angles.
Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite review: Hardware and performance
As a mid-range phone, the Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite is one of the best exponents, becoming comparable to high-end devices in everyday tasks. Its processor is a Snapdragon 660 octa-core with speeds of up to 2.2GHz. This, together with its Adreno 512 GPU and its 4GB of RAM, is capable of moving decent graphics loads in medium quality. By this, we mean games like PUBG Mobile or Arena of Valor. For the most basic tasks such as checking social networks or messaging services, the phone will not suffer any slowdown.
4GB of RAM is still good in terms of multitasking, so we won’t have to worry about accidentally closing an APP when replying to a message. Of course, part of the good performance of this Smartphone is due to the MIUI system that adequately optimizes the system capabilities.
With that said, although the phone performs nicely in games, we will not get gold here if we are very demanding. For example, Fortnite is not compatible with this SoC, and there are still slight moments of overheating in the case, but we cannot ask more from this price range.
Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite analysis: OS and connectivity
When it comes to software, the Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite comes with what you would expect from Xiaomi: the MIUI custom layer. In this case, we talk about MIUI 10 based on Android 8.1. We are faced with a system that adapts perfectly to the hardware as it is the company’s own. This greatly helps to save energy in the terminal, as well as to provide significant fluidity. It includes important features such as gesture control. However, it still has some shortcomings in its ease of use, but these are details that have been fixed with the updates. In fact, being a star device, this is among the list of terminals close to receiving MIUI 11.
At the level of connectivity, we do not find anything interesting it is even reprehensible that it does not have NFC even though other terminals of the brand have it. On a wireless level, we are facing a 4G Smartphone with support for 2 Nano Sim cards, Wi-Fi through a/b/g/n/ ac, Hotspot, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS, A-GPS, and GLONASS. For its wired connectivity, it only has a USB Type-C port, completely discarding the 3.5mm Jack in the process.
Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite review: Camera
Turning now to observe the cameras, it can be seen in the first instance that a double camera configuration is located in the upper left area, which is composed of a 12-megapixel Sony IMX363 sensor with f/1.9 aperture and pixel size of 1.4 µm. Meanwhile, the secondary sensor (depth) is a Samsung S5K5E8 of 5 megapixels (f/2.0). On the other hand, there is a 24-megapixel Sony IMX576 camera on the front.
An interesting aspect of these cameras is that they have artificial intelligence, which allows color correction depending on what you want to photograph. In addition to that, these cameras have an HDR mode able to capture sharper colors, a higher level of contrast and adequate brightness depending on the natural light presented in the photo.
At the moment of passing the real test of photos, we can see in the different samples that these cameras have very good frames, capable of adapting perfectly to any situation and place. At the same time, one of the elements that most stands out from the photographs and videos that can be achieved with these cameras, are the colors, which are completely crisp and lively, managing to perfectly differentiate the lights from the shadows.
However, as far as the resolution is concerned, there are still some doubts, because some photos can be noticed a little bit pixelated in some places. While the samples are from the rear cameras, the truth is that regarding image quality, the front camera manages to stand out much more, since the details are more precise and the resolution higher.
Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite review: Battery
The Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite is an average device in regards to battery. It has a capacity of 3,350mAh, which, although it might seem scarce under modern standards, it decently complies with keeping our device active. Under normal use, the Smartphone achieves 6 hours of autonomy without any setback. Its consumption in sleep mode is almost a joke, losing only 3% over the course of 8 hours.
Although the battery doesn’t last too long, what really stands out about the Mi 8 Lite in this section, is the fact that it will only take us an hour and a half to have it 100% charged again thanks to its Quick Charge 3.0 support.
Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite review: a mobile that stands out everywhere
Very few phones have reached the level of quality offered by the Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite, and although it is a lite version of last year’s flagship, is no slouch compared to similarly priced products even within the same brand, which has always stood out for offering the best quality to price ratio. This terminal stands out primarily for its screen and beautiful design. At the same time, its Snapdragon 660 octa-core processor coupled with its Adreno 512 GPU make this mobile a suitable device to run all kind of games without breaking the bank.
Its connectivity is also decent, supporting two Nano-SIM cards, as well as Bluetooth 5.0. The battery could be considered one of its weakest points, since although it is not bad, it could be much better, since it is only 3,350mAh, but luckily it has Quick Charge 3.0. Finally, its cameras are not the best, however, thanks to its double configuration in conjunction with its HDR mode, you can achieve incredible photos and videos.
- High resolution
- Elegant and very striking design
- Good price
- Good quality selfie camera
- Small battery
- Average picture quality from the rear-facing cameras
