One of the most interesting proposals among the mid-range smartphones is the Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite, which can be described as a cheaper version of the top Mi 8. Yes, it is a poorer model, but it certainly can not be said to be a cheap smartphone. On the contrary, the Mi 8 Lite can be a good choice, especially now that its price has dropped to around $250. However, it is worth bearing in mind that you have to accept a few shortcomings when choosing this model.

The quality of workmanship and a large housing
Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite, like most smartphones from the Chinese manufacturer’s offer, can positively surprise with the quality of performance, despite the low price. The described model can compete in this respect with devices that cost 2 thousand. Golden.
The front cover of the fifth generation Gorilla Glass glass, which is characterized by high resistance to scratches. I must point out that during this period Mi 8 Lite was carried in a pocket in which he was found several times with car keys.
The back also covered the glass. However, Xiaomi does not specify exactly what kind of glass we are dealing with. Probably not the fifth generation Gorilla Glass. Nevertheless, it does quite well in keeping its initial splendor. Yes, no scratches appeared on the back. However, I do not rule out the possibility that after a long time we can see any traces of use. It is worth to equip yourself with a case that will additionally provide protection during falls. The manufacturer adds a fairly good quality silicone case to the box.
The sides were covered with aluminum. Thanks to the fact that they are rounded, the Mi 8 Lite is well in the palm of your hand, and it should be noted that we are dealing with a really big smartphone. The exact dimensions are 156.4 × 75.8 × 7.5 mm, which is only slightly less than the iPhone XS Max. Returning to the materials used – the side buttons are already made of plastic. They have a slight, pleasant jump, although they are associated with devices from the lower price range.
Ideally, unfortunately, it is not. As I mentioned in the introduction, reaching for the Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite, you have to accept a few shortcomings. The first ones already occur in the case of the housing. it collects fingerprints too willingly. It takes just a few minutes for the whole back to be covered in oily traces. Secondly, the camera placed at the back slightly protrudes, which exposes it to damage. In addition, it can interfere when the smartphone lies on a hard surface – then it rests on the back side. Although due to the fact that both lenses are placed horizontally, there is no undesirable effect of swaying. Thirdly, Mi 8 Lite can be too big for many people. Yes, both hands are needed for handling. The whole body really feels in your pocket.
Display and Notch
For those who prefer large smartphones, one of the biggest advantages of Mi 8 Lite will be the display. The screen can boast a diagonal of 6.26 inches. For comparison, the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 has a screen 6.4 inches, and the iPhone X is “only” 5.8 inches. The resolution is 1080 × 2246 pixels, which ensures a pixel density of 403 ppi. So we get a really sharp image, in which you can not see individual pixels in normal use.
Color or viewing angles are good. However, I need to attach to the maximum brightness, which should be slightly larger to provide more comfort when using outdoors. Some deficiencies are felt primarily on a sunny day.
It also has advantages – due to the lack of a frame at the top, the smartphone is simply smaller. What’s more, in contrast to the top Mi 8, Xiaomi in the Lite edition received a noticeably smaller cut-out. However, there is still a problem with the limited number of notifications displayed on the top bar.
A notch can be “hidden” in the settings. However, this option did not appear in the Display section. Look for the Full-Screen Display menu. I consider such a breakdown to be intuitive and unnecessarily introducing chaos. After hiding the notches on the sides, a black bar with icons will be displayed. Interestingly, it is slightly larger vertically than the physical notch. In addition, due to the fact that we are dealing with a smartphone with an LCD screen that does not provide perfect black, the rear notch is clearly visible.
Xiaomi can use the potential of a large display. In Mi 8 Lite, the same as in other models, there is an option to split the screen into two applications running side by side. I admit that this option was never needed and I really do not feel any increase in productivity while using two applications on my smartphone. Especially that often in this mode the interface in applications is cut off and not all options are easily accessible. Of course, I understand that there will be people who will use the sharing function. Therefore, it deserves to be included in the list of advantages.
Performance, Games, and Battery
The Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite is equipped with an 8-core Snapdragon processor that achieves a maximum clock speed of 2.2 GHz. This system is made in a 14-nanometer lithographic process and consists of Kryo 260 cores. Adreno 512 deals with graphics processing. The user receives the basic version of 4 GB RAM and 64 GB for files. In turn, in the more expensive variant, we have 6 GB RAM and 128 GB for data. It is worth noting that there was also a slot for a microSD memory card.
A similar set can be found in other mid-range smartphones. Although it is worth noting that also in models that can cost several hundred zlotys more. Nobody will complain about the performance – yes, it is not the top Snapdragon 845, but the 660 model will work on most tasks. Android with the MIUI pad works really well. Popular applications from Google Play, as well as of course system applications, start almost immediately. The operating memory should not be missing either, even if we use several applications running in the background, and we always have several tabs open in Google Chrome. This applies to the tested basic variant with 4 GB RAM, so in a more expensive model with 6 GB RAM will be even better.
The applied specification allows for comfortable gameplay in Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds with medium graphic settings. There are only occasional drops in liquidity when playing. Mi 8 Lite will also cope with Asphalt 9. However, races that offer one of the nicer graphics, work in low resolution – you can see every pixel. I did not notice that the case was getting too warm, even during long sessions of playing. Less developed productions are no challenge for Snapdragon 660.
The 3350 mAh battery can provide a full working day without a charger. Mi 8 Lite can be disconnected at 8 am and then used until late in the evening, without worrying about discharging. Of course, if we decide to play or we will postpone the smartphone for only a few minutes within an hour, then a free socket will have to be searched after a few hours. The working time on the screen is about 5 hours. It is worth noting that the smartphone supports Quick Charge 3.0 fast charging technology. Of course, the right charger was included in the set.

Android 8.1 With MIUI 10
Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite works on the basis of Android 8.1 working with a great MIUI system overlay in version 10.0 (the update arrived at the device during testing). No one will be surprised by the fact that the device’s interface is characterized by a huge number of available functions and facilities. The interface is flat, the icons of all available applications can be found on the following home screens. As in the case of the Xiaomi Mi 8, the hand gesture interface mode is available, in which the control is done through gestures instead of using the buttons at the bottom of the screen: moving the finger from the bottom edge returns to the main screen, moving from the bottom edge and holding results in displaying the last used applications, while the side-off gesture from the edge replaces the Back button. Personally, I think,
Worse, when we look towards the notification bar. At this point, I have to mention one of the biggest problems of the device, which took place also in the “ordinary” Mi 8. The use of indentation in the upper part of the screen by Xiaomi turned out to be one of the worse solutions in the Android world. All because the Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite does not show notification icons on the top bar. The only thing you can count on is the battery indicator (no percentages), the status of the cellular network coverage and the watch. Unfortunately, this solution in everyday use turns out to be extremely uncomfortable. During tests, I have often learned about existing notifications only after expanding the notification bar. I do not find an explanation for this approach, especially considering the fact that
Of course, the smartphone has been equipped with a fingerprint scanner, which like in Xiaomi works infernally quickly and accurately, perfectly coping with fingerprint scanning from any angle. However, this is nothing compared to the possibility of unlocking your face. This works simply phenomenally. Among the Android devices that I have dealt with so far, Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite definitely has the best impression. After pressing the power button or lifting the device, if we keep it in front of the face, after the screen backlight, the lock screen can not be seen for a moment. What’s better, the function works flawlessly even in low light, it does not terrify even partial covering of the face or a large angle. Undoubtedly, it is this function that I will miss the most after finishing my smartphone tests.

Cameras & Sound
The main camera at the back consists of two lenses. They were placed on a protruding island in a horizontal position. The first camera has 12 MP (Sony IMX363) and aperture f / 1.9. The second has 5 MP and is used to obtain a better background blur effect. In turn, a 24 MP camera with f / 2.2 aperture has been placed on the front – no, it does not take better photos from the main camera. Megapixels are only meant to encourage uninformed customers who are guided solely by this value in the assessment of the camera.
It can certainly be said that Xiaomi has made progress in the quality of the photos. Photos were taken Mi 8 Lite usually look pretty good, especially on a small screen of your smartphone or uploaded to Instagram. However, it should be borne in mind that in the case of quite bright light, there are serious slip-ups with photo x-rays. In addition, it should be remembered that at night it is better to use a different smartphone/camera – pictures in low lighting conditions suffer, among others, for lack of detail, noise and just look very average.
The front camera has a problem with excessive facial smoothing, which is visible even after turning off all beauty modes. Nevertheless, it will provide a pretty good selfie during the day. It is much worse when the light decreases. The camera application is not unique. In the foreground, all basic options and modes have been drawn – a short video, video, ordinary photo, portrait, square, panorama and manual mode. However, it works really well and is intuitive.
The AI function has also appeared . Artificial intelligence is supposed to recognize objects and adjust the parameters accordingly so that the photo looks better. The mode is noticeably less rigorous with Huaweia smartphones, although the principle of improving photos is quite similar. Most often, it works to conquer colors and also slightly contrast, which can be compared to light retouching in the Instagram application. Photos may seem prettier, but you have to bear in mind that they lose their naturalness.
The loudspeaker is placed under the cover, next to the USB Type-C connector. Well, it will not work while listening to music – the sound is too shallow. In addition, problems with cleanliness start to be heard at high volume levels. However, you should appreciate the maximum volume – you have to try not to hear the incoming call. Of course, when watching videos on YouTube or while playing, the sound quality is satisfactory.
Summary: is it worth buying a Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite?
Since the publication of my first impressions , Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite has become an even more interesting proposition. In many stores, its price has dropped significantly – today it is easy to get for around $250 (6GB+128GB Version). At this price, we get a nice device, although you have to keep in mind that it is really a big smartphone. The housing was made of aluminum and glass, materials that only a few years ago were available only in premium devices.
The Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite is also a high performance, refined MIUI overlay and a rich set of useful software already available out of the box. Of course, you need to remember about the disadvantages of this model. First of all, the NFC module was missing. Secondly, the smartphone has not been equipped with a minijack connector. In addition, the quality of the photos is quite uneven, even those performed in similar conditions. Not everyone will like the notch at the top of the screen. Despite these shortcomings, Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite is the most interesting proposition among inexpensive smartphones. It should appeal to people who are looking for a large device that has been enclosed in a fairly nice housing.
