Xiaomi Amazfit Stratos smartwatch($171) vs. Amazfit Pace smartwatch(153): Which should you purchase?

Warmer weather calls for hotter workouts. Looking for a tracking companion? In this post, we take a look at the two best selling sports watches by Xiaomi: the Original Amazfit Pace smartwatch and the newer Amazfit Stratos/Pace 2 Smartwatch. Is the later model worth the extra buck? And, if you already have the original AMAZFIT, should you get an upgrade? Find answers to all of these questions below.

Amazfit Stratos vs. Amazfit pace: basic specs

Both watches look quite the same on paper. They both feature the same 1.3 inch display, same resolution and same lip on the bottom. Both sport an e-paper display — a transflective material that is backlit in the dark but still remains highly visible outdoors even in bright sunlight. In addition to offering a good viewing experience, both watches are very energy-efficient, which is a great plus. Other features include Bluetooth (use the AMAZFIT app to connect to your smartphone for extra functionality), GPS and Wi-Fi. Both watches run on a similar version of operating system — which is Android based. To clearly show you the features of the two  Amazfit smartwatches, we make a comparison in the form of specs table side by side.

Amazfit Stratos vs. Amazfit pace: design

At a closer look, you will notice that the Amazfit Stratos/pace 2 smartwatch is visually larger than the original ( 9.06 x 1.38 x 0.59 inches for the Amazfit Stratos 2 vs.  9.65 x 1.77 x 0.47 inches for the Amazfit pace) — mostly thanks to the bigger bezel.

The two watches also differ significantly in style: the AMAZFIT Pace is clean, simple, with no frills, while the newer model makes more of a “professional” statement with its chronos on the display and crowns on the sides. The crowns are not just for show as well, they are a great help with navigation when you don’t want to use the touch screen display: use the side buttons to go up and down when selecting things. Another visual upgrade on the Amazfit Stratos is the curved display, which gives the whole gadget a more “luxurious” feel, compared to the absolutely flat display on the older model. The original also sports a double-colored strap: black on the outside and bright orange on the inside, emphasizing that sporty look and feel, while the newer model is all black, business (Batman) style.

Amazfit Stratos vs. Amazfit pace: use

Now let’s take a look under the hood, so to speak, and see how all the new and old functionality translates into everyday use. Let’s get the tech details out of the way first: both watches run on the same processor and come with 512MB RAM and 4GB ROM. Both feature 280mAh batteries, which offer a surprisingly decent amount of juice: you get 5 days on standby without a re-charge. Feature-wise, both watches come with everything needed to encourage a healthy lifestyle. You get built-in heart rate monitors, pedometers, sleep monitors and other fitness trackers.

Navigation is similar: you can scroll from the side on each watch to bring out the app menu. A slight difference here is that you will need to do some vertical scrolling on the AMAZFIT Pace to get to all the apps, while the AMAZFIT pace 2 has done away with vertical scrolling and you just need to swipe horizontally to switch between apps. There are more apps on the AMAZFIT as well. You get a specialized FM radio app and a Xiaomi Smart Home page — a very useful extra to have, especially if you already have Xiaomi smart home devices — as your smartwatch can be a handy mini remote control for your gadgetry like speakers and smart bulbs.

Both watches are waterproof, but the AMAZFIT Stratos takes swimming tracking to a whole new level with a specialized app for swimming and diving  — and you can take the watch as deep as 50 meters down. This is a big deal for all the swimmers out there — and a significant improvement on the earlier version, especially in terms of waterproofing. The AMAZFIT Pace is IP67 waterproof rated, but it is not capable of withstanding water pressure associated with diving.

Amazfit Stratos vs. Amazfit pace: the verdict

Most of our gadget comparisons come down to the same question: what are you looking for? And while this is also the case when deciding whether you want the Xiaomi AMAZFIT Pace for $153.07 or the Amazfit Stratos/pace 2 for $171, we can see where the price difference is coming from. The Amazfit Stratos would be especially attractive to swimmers, those looking for advanced fitness tracking and Xiaomi fans who would have the option of pairing the watch with other Xiaomi smart home gadgets. The Xiaomi AMAZFIT Pace smartwatch is a classic and a bestseller in its own right. It’s simple yet very effective in basic sports tracking — and quite nice looking too.

Is the new model worth an upgrade? We’d have to answer with a tentative “yes” as we are impressed with some of the new functionality. If you are buying your first fitness tracker, however, the Xiaomi AMAZFIT Pace smartwatch is perfectly suited for the job and is a great deal money-wise.
