Since this is not an expensive phone we had in mind that content of the package will be standard. For the most of the part, they were. In the brown box with UIMI inscription on it, there is a phone, USB cable, charger, English manual and needle for removing the SIM card. There are also a screen protector and the case for protecting the phone – a great addition, we must add. The thing that surprised us the most is that headphones came in the box as well. It is a rarity nowadays so kudos for UIMI team.
Design of the UIMI U5
Design wise, this phone leaves no one indifferent. It is graced by a classic design and made out of stainless steel. Materials used made the build very robust and durable. Even if you are very clumsy, and the device often falls to the ground, it will be practically unharmed. The device resembles a bit of Huawei smartphones. You really would not believe that this phone is that greatly built given it is only 5.5mm thick and 138 grams light. If it weren’t for that camera hump, it would be even thinner.
The phone feels comfortable in the hand and, because of its size, it is very good for one-handed use. Side bezels are nearly non-existent with the bottom and the top bezels are not too large. The device comes in gold and silver color.
On the front side of the device, there are standard capacitive controls bellow the 5.3-inch screen, with a camera above the display and additional sensors and speaker beside it.
On the back of the device, there is a simple and straightforward UIMI logo and protruded primary camera with dual LED flash.
Top and bottom house a standard micro USB port and 3.5mm headphone jack. The power, volume buttons, and SIM card slot are based on the left and right side of the device.
UIMI U5 comes equipped with 5.3-Inch IPS 720p screen. The screen is pleasant to look at – both indoors and on direct sunlight readability is good. Color reproduction and contrast are on par with the industry standards. The only thing that it lacks is a greater resolution. 5.3-inches with 720p resolution doesn’t sound good on paper and in the real life it’s not that good either.
On closer inspection you can see individual pixels, but if you do not hold a phone too close to your eyes, it will be ok. The great thing about the display is that it’s equipped with Corning’s Gorilla Glass 3 protection. It will serve you well and shield your phone against scratches. All in all, our opinion on the display of this phone is a mixed bag.
Processor and RAM
UIMI M3 is equipped with 64-bit Quad-Core MTK6732 1.3/1.5 GHz (depended on the region) processor. Random Acess Memory is 1GB (2GB on some versions). GPU that ticks inside is Mali-T760. This device is not well endowed with hardware specs, but we can’t complain about everyday usage.
Some 3D games were tough to play because of the lower framerate, and there is a lag or two on the multitasking sometimes. You definitely should skip this device if you are planning on buying it for playing latest games only. For occasional gaming, web browsing and multimedia, this phone is quite good.
Considering the price that you pay for this phone, it is safe to say that camera performance came as a big surprise. It is not superb by all means, but if you are looking for a good shooter, this is it. The main camera lens features 13 Megapixel size and boasts autofocus.
It offers plenty of details in daylight. Some noise creeps here and there, but that is to be expected. Colors are punchy, and dynamic range is fine as well. Low-light images are not that great, but dual LED flash can assist there. Videos are average looking but offer relatively high bitrate and good contrast.
Front facing camera has 5 Megapixel lens, and it was ok for selfies and conference calls.
The camera offers a plethora of shooting modes like HDR, face and smile detection, self-timer, and a face-beauty mode. It is not iPhone 6S fast, but it is not slouching either. It was a good experience overall.
Here are some samples for you to judge yourselves.
Our review unit came with 16GB of storage on board, but there are versions featuring 32GB as well. After the initial setup, you are left with about 12GB of storage for your preferences. Being that in 2016 apps and games occupy a lot of storage space, 12GB is not that much. The good thing is that you can always expand that storage with a micro SD card up to 64GB. Even people with large song collections can enjoy this phone.
The device comes with Android 4.4.2 KitKat version. It is an old version, but it is the most widely used version to date. The good thing is that manufacturer loaded stock Android on this phone, and that enhances the experience by an excellent margin. There are no lags in a day to day use and phone feels very snappy and responsive for its price range.
Being that this is Android device, you can enjoy in many apps and games designed especially for Google’s OS. It is simple to connect to Google Play store and download your favorite content. It is probable that update to a newer version of Android OS will come in a close future.
UIMI U5 comes with the standard connectivity options. There are plenty of GSM, WCDMA, and LTE covered networks, so this device should work on every part of the world and has good reception. This phone can use two micro SIM cards at the same time.
For connecting to the internet using another way than mobile data, you can use Wi-Fi modem built in. It is equipped with Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n modem.
Bluetooth 4.0 is also on board, and that means you can use your device with Bluetooth earphones and transfer files more quickly and power efficiently.
2G: GSM 900/1800MHz
3G: WCDMA 2100MHz
4G: FDD-LTE 1800/2600MHz
UIMI U5 Battery
Now we come to the weakest link of the device. The phone comes with an 1850mAh Lithium-Ion battery. It is good enough to last you trough a working day. You can use it for a full day and a little more if you are a light user. In the time when battery life means a lot, we must say that we are a little disappointed by the battery life on this device. The iPhone 6 has the same battery capacity, and it can pull it off and UIMI, unfortunately, can’t. Don’t be desperate because you can always carry your charger around and replenish the battery when needed.
UIMI U5 comes with some interesting features on board like Air swipe and Smart awake. By weaving in front of your screen, you can wake the device up from sleep or do something else like answer the phone call, etc.
It is always good when a phone comes with excellent multimedia capabilities and a broad range of codecs on board. FM receiver is embedded in the phone and works great. You can listen to your favorite stations anytime and anywhere. Keep in mind that for radio to work you must plug in your headphones because they work as an antenna. Different kind of sensors like light, gravity, pressure and gesture sensor are on board. GPS and A-GPS are included too, and they offer faster locating.
Pros and cons
After an initial assessment of this smartphone, we have concluded that it offers plenty of good stuff and some of the bad stuff as well.
- Great design and build material – incredibly sturdy and good looking piece of hardware
- LTE enabled – faster internet browsing and download speeds
- Good 13 Megapixel camera
- Expandable storage
- Stock Android experience
- Headphones come in the box
- Display with lower resolution than expected
- Battery life not up to standards
- Older Android version
We used this phone for over a week, and we can say that it was an enjoyable experience. Keep in mind that this is not the flagship device by any means – it cannot offer you premium hardware inside. But, if you are in a market for an affordable smartphone with decent specs for its price and “killer” body you will not be disappointed.
