T-bao Tbook X8S Pro Review: A Mid-range Gaming Laptop at $300+

Chinese laptop makers do not come in with gaming laptops frequently. They are more focused on the ultrabooks that imitate the Microsoft Surbook and the Apple MacBook Air. But T-bao has decided to break this rule and launched a 15.6-inch gaming laptop packed with an Intel Celeron chip and a GeForce graphics. But if the ultrabooks launched by the same company use their appearance to sell more, the gaming laptops should use other techniques. In other words, they should come with a powerful GPU and CPU. So let’s find out whether the T-bao Tbook X8S Pro corresponds this title.

T-bao Tbook X8S Pro Appearance

First, the T-bao Tbook X8S Pro comes with a standard packaging. This statement is true for the package content as well. Besides the laptop itself, there is an AC adapter, a user manual in English, and an inspection certificate.

Actually, this notebook is black. But the top and the bottom are silver. Can’t say why the manufacturer has decided to use such an appearance. Anyways, its housing is made of plastic. The finish is good, but we can’t prove it provides a high-class feeling. Well, this is done to reduce the pricing. And we should accept it as a logical decision.

On the right side, the laptop carries a USB 3.0, MiniHDMI, and USB Type – C ports, and DC – IN interface.

On the opposite side, the T-bao Tbook X8S Pro carries a gigabit LAN port, audio jack, USB 3.0 port, and SD slot.

Usually, the ultrabooks coming our way from T-bao, Chuwi, Jumper, and other Chinese manufacturers have a clue on the front to make it easy-to-open. But this laptop has nothing like that. However, the opening process won’t require many efforts, because the edges are rounded a bit.

As we said, this notebook uses an all-plastic housing. This refers to the bottom as well. As we can see, there are two speakers placed on both edges, while the ventilation grill is on the lower side.

The T-bao Tbook X8S Pro comes with a 15.6-inch screen that provides a Full HD resolution and uses an IPS screen technology. Many will complain about the IPS, but we should recall this is a $300 laptop. So the provided viewing experience is quite acceptable.

To give some sportive look the manufacturer has added red printings instead of white, and couple of lines on the touchpad. It’s placed in the center. We know many users complain of this and want it to be on the left side, but all the latest Chinese laptops come with such a layout. Probably there are some changes in touchpad usage experience.

As for the keyboard itself, though we are dealing with a 15.6-inch laptop, there is no numerical part. Moreover, the keyboard has no backlight. That’s what gamers like. But the manufacturer has decided not to come in with such a feature.

The key pitch is approximately 19mm. The keystroke is standard. As for the keys texture, we feel crappy. The impression from typing is not astonishing, but acceptable. What we like most, is the noiseless work of the keys.

T-bao Tbook X8S Pro Hardware

The T-bao Tbook X8S Pro is packed with a Celeron J 3455 chip, which has been initially made for desktop PCs. Moreover, it can be found on such mini PCs, as the VORKE V1 Plus, which shows way better performance than the N3350 and N3450 found on tons of Chinese laptops. The SoC is paired with a 6GB of RAM and 128GB of eMMC storage. Finally, the laptop sports an NVIDIA GeForce 920M GPU. This hardware works under the control of Windows 10 Home.

The first benchmark teste for the Tbook X8S Pro was the Dragon Quest X Benchmark. It showed 4888 points. This is not the best result we can see on a laptop, but in comparison to the same VORKE V1 Plus that scored 2892 point only, we can understand the benefits coming our way from GeForce GPU. However, when it comes to the score, it’s lower than the Core i3.

The Dragons Dogma Online (DDON) Benchmark shows better results, and we can compare this SoC to the 7th generation Core i3 chip in some cases.

The next test implemented by 3D Mark showed good results comparable to the Core i3.

Finally, the T-bao Tbook X8S Pro was tested by the PC Mark, which shows the overall performance state. But it mainly refers to the CPU performance rather than the GPU performance. That’s why it provides almost identical results as the VORKE V1 Plus.

This is a gaming laptop. So the battery should come with a respectable capacity. This product is packed with a 9000mAh lithium battery supporting fact charging technology.

We tested it by setting the display brightness at 75% and the sound volume was varying between 50% – 100%. A 30-minutes test of typing, web browsing and YouTube video watching consumed 14% of the power. Therefore, the laptop is capable of providing less than 4 hours of life on a single charge. Not that good, but there is nothing to boast of as well.

Final Words

The T-bao Tbook X8S Pro is the first attempt of the company to come in with a gaming laptop.  So we should be tolerated. In this sense, it’s better to pay more attention to the fact what kind of performance the Celeron + GeForce combinations brings. As we have seen, the laptop is good when it comes to graphics combined performance, and it provides almost the identical results as the Core i3 processors. But when it refers to the CPU only, we see common results. Therefore, we can conclude the T-bao Tbook X8S Pro is convenient to play mid-heavy online games. But it will have some problems when launching heavy games. Actually, we haven’t been waiting for a $300 laptop to provide a perfect gaming performance. So everything is balanced.
