No time to do anything according to the formula or the formula. Because of this latest Samsung Galaxy A80, a mid-range smartphone launched with technology, Rotating Camera camera calls for good feedback from both direct consumers and partners. But if apart from the camera, what else is good?

Design & Appearance

Apart from the display, what strikes you the most when holding the Galaxy A80 is its size. This is a massive phone that is not only tall and wide but bulky as well. It measures 165.2 x 76.5 x 9.3mm and has a significant weight of 220 grams, which feels quite heavy to hold in 2019 after using lightweight devices well under 170 grams. It’s clear the Galaxy A80 is not for everyone. It is for those who don’t mind using a large device if they’re getting a tall and immersive display to make up for it. But the really cool thing is that the Super AMOLED screen, which is already one of the highlights of Samsung, makes the colors of the picture look dark, bright and sharp. Enjoy it if you use it to watch the series on Netflix, Youtube or various video streaming apps that, when mixed with the size of the 6.7-inch screen, are very flimsy.

Hardware

As a true upper midrange, the Galaxy A80 offers a generous amount of operating memory and storage. This time around, however, Samsung went all in, equipping the phone with no less than 8GB of RAM (the Galaxy S10 has that much) and 128GB of internal memory. The 8nm octa-core Snapdragon 730 processor is no slouch, either, as it is set in a 2.2GHz Dual + 1.8GHz Hexa-core configuration.

Cameras

The truly unique aspect of the Galaxy A80 is its rotating camera, allowing you to use the same triple rear camera system for selfies. The phone gets a 48MP f/2.0 Sony IMX586 main sensor for crisp and detailed high-res photos, an 8MP f/2.2 ultra-wide-angle camera and ToF (Time of Flight) camera for depth mapping. When switching to the selfie mode, the top rear panel rises up and the camera system flips to the front. The camera also supports Super Steady video mode, Scene Optimiser, and Flaw Detection, among other things.

The main camera shoots in 12MP resolution by default, but you can switch to raw 48MP mode by changing the aspect ratio to 3:4H. Using the default mode, the sensor uses pixel binning to stitch together four shots to create one bright and attractive photo. This works well in daylight and is recommended for low-light as well. The 48MP model is best used during daylight scenarios for capturing landscape and sceneries. While zooming into some 48MP shots, I found the details were not as sharp as I would have liked them to be, especially when compared to the Realme X, which uses the same 48MP Sony sensor.

Battery

The Galaxy A80’s sufficiently large 3700 mAh battery can be topped up very quickly with the fast 25W brick in the box, faster than even the S10 trio. One would think that 3700 mAh coupled with a 1080p display and a modern 8nm chipset would bring much better screen-on time in our grueling test compared to the 2K panels on the S10 family, but that’s not exactly the case.

Verdict & Buy

The New Infinity design idea has a huge potential, though, and if Samsung manages to equip its subsequent iterations with a better camera in a more compact footprint, that would constitute a killer handset.
