Redmi Note 8 vs Redmi Note 7, what are the main differences? Price and Availability!

Yesterday, Xiaomi’s sub-brand unveiled its new Redmi Note 8 and Redmi Note 8 Pro. Two new smartphones that are located in the middle and medium-high range respectively and that have undoubtedly attracted a large number of followers not only from the Chinese firm but from virtually any follower of technology in general.

It is not for less, the great success that Redmi Note 7 has had reaching spectacular figures of more than 20 million units sold in just over half a year, make this renovation quite attractive, although in principle, as you can see then the difference between Note 7 and Note 8 is very small.

Design and construction

In terms of size, although both terminals have the same screen, the new Redmi Note 8 is slightly larger than the Redmi Note 7 . Likewise, the weight of the new model exceeds 186 grams of the previous generation by 4 grams.

  • Note 7 : 159.21 × 75.21 × 8.1 mm – 186 g – Space Black, Neptune Blue, Nebula Red
  • Note 8 : 161.3 × 76.4 × 8.4 mm – 190 g – Meteorite Black, Fantasy Blue, White

Both terminals have Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection , both on its screen and on its back. In addition, on the back of the two models we will find a fingerprint sensor provided in its central area.

Probably where we see a major change is in its front. And, unlike the Redmi Note 7, the new Redmi model has a lower frame rather reduced , thus achieving greater use of its screen. In addition, the Redmi Note 8 has the new logo of the Chinese firm hosted in this framework.

The screen equipped in these two mid-range smartphones does not present large differences, at least in theory. And it is that contrary to what was thought, the new Redmi Note 8 has once again incorporated a 6.3-inch LCD screen with an FHD + resolution of 2,340 × 1,080 pixels.

  • Note 7 : 6.3 ? LCD display and FHD + resolution (2,340 × 1,080 pixels) – 409ppi
  • Note 8 : 6.3 ? LCD display and FHD + resolution (2,340 × 1,080 pixels) – 409ppi

Likewise, both terminals have a notch in the form of a drop of water on the top of their screens, housing in this case two selfies cameras of different resolutions that we will review in the following sections.

Performance and Software

As for performance and internal components, the new Redmi Note 8 has made a small leap compared to the hardware of Note 7. And, in the new model we find a Snapdragon 665 built in 11nm and with a maximum frequency of 2GHz . A new Qualcomm processor, which although the difference with respect to the Snapdragon 660 of the previous generation is very small, gains in better consumption, in better graphics and especially in terms of artificial intelligence refers.

  • Note 7 : Snapdragon 660 14nm – Adreno 512 GPU – 3 / 4GB RAM LPDDR4X – 32/64 / 128GB storage – Support microSD up to 256GB.
  • Note 8 : Snapdragon 665 11nm – Adreno 610 GPU – 4 / 6GB LPDDR4X RAM – 64 / 128GB storage – Support microSD up to 256GB.

In addition, both models have similar internal characteristics: same type of RAM and support for microSD up to 256GB. Of course, only in the new Redmi Note 8 we can reach 6GB of RAM in its 6 / 128GB variant.

Similarly and referring to its software, both Redmi Note 7 and Redmi Note 8 have the famous Xiaomi MIUI customization layer. Both with its version number 10 based on Android 9 Pie .

Photography and video

Another of the main differences we find between these two mid-range smartphones is in their cameras. And, in the case of Redmi Note 8 we find a total of four photographic sensors on its back, thus winning in relation to the Redmi Note 7, a wide angle lens and a new macro type sensor.

  • Note 7:
    • Rear camera: 48MP + 5MP – f / 1.79 – 1.6 µm (Super Pixel) – PDAF
    • Selfie: 13MP
  • Note 8:
    • Rear camera: 48MP + 8MP + 2MP + 2MP – f / 1.79 – 1.6 µm (Super Pixel) – PDAF
    • Selfie: 13MP

As we can see on these lines, although the dual camera of the Redmi Note 7 fulfills its task quite well, the fact of having a wide angle and a macro lens make the Redmi Note 8 much more attractive. Even so it should be noted that the main camera Both models have the same characteristics so we will not notice a big difference in everyday photographs.

In the case of the selfie camera, both models have a 13MP photographic sensor , equipped with the various Xiaomi beauty modes based on artificial intelligence as well as with HDR mode .

This is probably one of the sections where more features, if not all, share the Redmi Note 7 and Note 8. And, as we can read below, both models have the same technologies and not only in their WiFi or Bluetooth, but also in its connection interfaces:

  • Note 7 : Dual SIM – WiFi AC – Bluetooth 5.0 – GPS / A-GPS / GLONASS – USB Type C – Mini jack – IR sensor (infrared)
  • Note 8 : Dual SIM – WiFi AC – Bluetooth 5.0 – GPS / A-GPS / GLONASS – USB Type C – Mini jack – IR sensor (infrared)

Finally, in terms of autonomy, both the Redmi Note 7 and the Redmi Note 8 have a 4,000mAhbattery . A sufficient capacity to ensure that its autonomy exceeds the day of use, also counting in both cases with a fast charge of 18W Quick Charge 4 from Qualcomm.

Still it should be noted that the consumption of Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 (11nm) processor mounted on the Redmi Note 8 has a slightly lower consumption than the Snapdragon 660(14nm) of the Redmi Note 7. A fact that is based on the theory but which in practice is probably invaluable.

Although we still do not know if the new Redmi Note 8 will reach the global market if it is true that this new device has certain characteristics superior to those of the Redmi Note 7. Even so, from XiaomiAdictos we think that it is not worth the jump until the new model if you already have a Redmi Note 7.

On the contrary, if you are looking for a new smartphone within the mid-range, the Redmi Note 8 and its quad rear camera, as well as its rather improved design, make it one of the most attractive options within the range , again positioning itself as the king of the mid-range if finally its price does not differ much in relation to what we saw yesterday in his presentation.
