Qualcomm is one of the most important chip manufacturers in the world, which recently held a conference called Snapdragon Tech Summit 2018, where the company officially announced the arrival of their new flagship chipset: the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855. This processor is the successor of the popular Snapdragon 845 that is the chip of the current generation. The Snapdragon 855 has a very special feature, and it is that is capable of supporting 5G networks, in conjunction with another series of specifications that seek to improve the user experience.
This is very important because mobile manufacturers are starting to move towards the generation of 5G, so Qualcomm, being one of the most important companies in the manufacture of smartphone chips, could not be left behind with respect to this new world of possibilities. In fact, thanks to this announcement, the Snapdragon 855 has become the first commercial mobile platform with 5G.
Features of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855
This is a very interesting chip starting with its ability to connect to 5G by means of the Snapdragon X50 5G modem manufactured by the same company. This modem is combined with the Qualcomm QTM052 antenna modules, mmWave, integrated RF ans-receiver, RF front antenna, and antenna elements. We are facing an octa-core processor that are divided in the following way, four energy saving cores with a speed of 1.78GHz, three medium performance cores with a speed of 2.42GHz and finally a special “gold” core that allows Increase performance and reach a speed of 2.84GHz. In addition to this, the SoC is paired with an Adreno 640 GPU.
It shares a similarity with the Apple A12 Bionic chipset and the Kirin 980, and it was also manufactured by means of the TSM 7nm process. Along with all this, this processor has the fourth generation of the multi-core IA engine of this company, which supposedly is speculated to offer up to 3 times the performance of AI offered by the Snapdragon 845. This processor also includes something unique and is that it is the first product with an artificial vision image signal processor (CV-ISP), which offers new functions for capturing photos and videos. With respect to its video games capabilities, the company offers in this processor the Snapdragon Elite Gaming, which are a set of options on the mobile platform that will help improve the gaming experience.
Another thing that Qualcomm announced during this conference was the Qualcomm 3D sound sensor, which is a solution for the fingerprint reader that is under the screen that uses ultrasonic waves, very different from the normal sensors that use light. Many of the devices that will come next year will feature the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 for everything this product offers. Qualcomm will continue to reveal details while the conference continues in Hawaii, USA.
