OPPO A7 Review: The Best Model in 1000-Yuan Niche

When you think of a thousand-yuan smartphone, what feature you are thinking of first? Is it the appearance? Is it the black and white photo performance? Is it the smooth operation? This year, OPPO has managed to launch a variety of smartphones, with a decent specs list and appearance that meet the needs of various consumers. Recently, this company has launched the OPPO A7 phone, which continues to enrich the market of 1000-2000 yuan ($144-288). After a few days of use, the A7 completely refreshed our thoughts of this price range models. If not knowing beforehand that it is a mid-range machine, we would think it belongs to the high-end niche. If you don’t believe in this, let’s get a closer look at its selling points.

OPPO A7 Design

The appearance has been always the trump card of OPPO phones. They have been always very elegant in design, and this tradition has continued in the OPPO A7. The body uses nano-micro crystal technology, and the delicate body reflects a very beautiful light. At the same time, on the fuselage, the vertical texture of the peacock feathers is added, which enhances the temperament of the whole machine. In addition, the OPPO A7 also achieves the effect of a glass mirror on the glass-like back shell.

In the camera section, the OPPO A7 uses a more classic dual-camera arrangement. The camera is surrounded by a metal ring protection.

The middle frame is made of a matte plastic, and the undulating excessive feel is very good. At the same time, the front 2.5D glass panel and the curved body on the back have a perfect transition with the middle frame, ensuring a good grip. Although it is a plastic body, it has made a very good texture. On the left side of the fuselage, we can see the volume button and the SIM card slot. On the right, there is the power button. The bottom of the fuselage carries the speaker, microphone, micro-USB interface, and 3.5mm headphone jack.

On the front, the OPPO A7 sports a 6.2-inch AMOLED water drop full-screen. The latter is mainly used in the top-end models. As for OPPO, it’s used in the R series. So it’s quite attractive to see in an A series handset that costs around 1500 yuan ($216). Anyway, due to this design, the screen ratio reaches 88.3%. But you should know its resolution is 1560 x 720 pixels only.

For the first time, the OPPO A7 used the sheet for 3D processing, achieving the industry’s thinnest 0.64mm body, which makes it quite convenient for single-hand operations.

OPPO A7 Camera

Apart from the appearance, another selling point of the OPPO A7 is its ability of taking great photos. This handset is packed with a rear 13MP + 2MP dual-camera, with an aperture size of F/2.2 + F/2.4 and a single pixel size of 1.12-micron. Due to the large aperture + large pixel size, the phone’s picture quality can be greatly improved. That’s why the OPPO A7 is very competitive in the same price range products.

On the front, there is a 16MP camera that supports AI smart beauty function, which recognizes 296 feature points of the face, and then performs targeted beauty optimization, with more than 8 million beauty data. In so many data, it chooses the most suitable beauty program. So each shot is unique.

Through the actual photo samples, we can see that the OPPO A7 is very good in both the daytime lighting conditions and the dim night conditions. At least, it stands out in the same price range models.

Besides this, the OPPO A7 supports face unlock feature. It can intelligently collect 128 feature points on the face that not only ensure sufficient security but also provide a fast unlocking experience. In the actual test, even in the dark environment, the OPPO A7 can quickly complete facial recognition without delay.

OPPO A7 Performance

The OPPO A7 uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 processor and has 4GB of memory and 64GB of storage space to meet daily needs. It also runs on ColorOS 5.2 system, which has become smarter, more efficient, etc. For example, the smart negative screen integrates various functions of the day. We can swipe inward from the edge of the screen to call out the ‘smart sidebar’ – this feature makes it easy to perform common operations such as screenshots, screen recording, and switching frequently used applications with one click. For example, when we watch videos or play games, we don’t want to interrupt the current operation. We can switch between social apps through the ‘smart sidebar’.

In fact, the most attractive feature is the OPPO’s latest HyperBoost acceleration engine. In it, the OPPO system engine optimizes the underlying scheduling of the phone, allowing it to run faster. Through the OPPO game engine, the most popular games are played more smoothly. And the OPPO application engine is for the commonly used apps. It provides an optimized, faster response, smoother use, and better use of the entire phone.

In order to see the performance of the OPPO A7 in actual use, we played Honor of Kings and recorded the game frame rate through GameBench. Looking at the screenshot, we can see the phone faces no problem when playing this game.

In terms of battery, the OPPO A7 comes with a built-in 4230mAh battery. The actual endurance performance is very good. It can play 16 hours and 20 minutes of video, or 8 and a half hours of the Honor of Kings. At the same time, the OPPO A7 also brings the ‘application quick freezing’ function, which can ‘quickly freeze’ the application with high power consumption in the background, optimizing the use of the battery.

The Bottom Line

The stylish appearance of the sandwich structure + cool color matching makes the flagship machines of the general manufacturers feel awkward. So, if you are looking for a thousand-yuan smartphone that is easy to use and looks stylish enough, then you shouldn’t miss the OPPO A7.
