We saw many amazing smartphones in April. And though the Xiaomi Black Shark and Nubia Red Dev gaming smartphones were in the spotlight, there were super mid-range devices caught our attention as well. Say, Nubia launched the Mavericks 9 in face of the Nubia Z18 mini on April 11, while the Meizu 15 was launched a bit later, on April 22. The Nubia Z18 Limited Provence Edition, which is the highest variant, costs 2199 yuan ($345), while the Meizu 15 Standard Edition costs 2499 yuan ($392).
Both models come with a Snapdragon 660. Therefore, they are capable of providing quite stable and smooth performance. But both smartphones have some disadvantages as well. We have decided to compare these handsets in order to find out their advantages and shortcomings.
Appearance: Nubia Z18 mini vs Meizu 15
These smartphones use quite different designs. If the Nubia Z18 mini comes with a trendy 5.7-inch full-screen with an 18:9 aspect ratio, the Meizu 15 sports a traditional 16:9 screen at 5.46 inches. The Meizu 15 is available in four color variants such as Ink, Yakin, Indigo, and White. But what’s more important, it comes with a metal housing passed through wire drawing process.
On the other hand, both models adopt integrated metal middle frame design. They also come with a 3.5mm audio jack and USB Type-C port. On the Z18 mini, in addition to the volume rocker, there is also a special Mavericks voice button.
Interestingly, the Nubia Z18 mini still uses the post-fingerprint identification reader, while Meizu has always insisted on fingerprint recognition on the front of the phone. Meizu’s mBack feature is indeed very good, and Nubia’s FiT function is equally impressive.
Software: Nubia Z18 mini vs Meizu 15
As the operating system is the only human-computer interaction interface, its quality will directly affect the overall experience. The Nubia Z18mini runs on Nubia UI 5.1 based on Android 8.1 (customized for the Nubia Z18 mini). At the same time, it adopts the NeoSmart artificial intelligence engine, which is more excellent in system optimization and power saving.
The Meizu 15 runs on the latest Flyme7 operating system. Unfortunately, the system is still based on Android7.1, but we believe that Meizu’s strength in optimization can bring a smooth mobile experience.
Hardware: Nubia Z18 mini vs Meizu 15
In terms of configuration, the Nubia Z18 mini uses a Snapdragon 660 processor paired with a standard 6GB RAM and 64GB or 128GB storage options. The Meizu 15 also uses Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 processor coupled with a 4GB RAM and 64GB or 128GB ROM. So we can state the Nubia Z18 mini is more attractive in terms of price-over-hardware ratio.
Camera: Nubia Z18 mini vs Meizu 15
The Nubia Z18 mini sports a 24+5MP dual-rear camera accompanied by a flashlight. The Meizu 15 is equipped with a 20+12MP camera with a Meizu-exclusive 6-LED ring flash.
As the photo samples show, the Nubia Z18 mini is capable of providing more realistic colors, but the Meizu 15’s saturation and contrast are higher. So the latter takes more user-friendly photos.
The Bottom Line
These smartphones can be called ‘small and beautiful.’ The Nubia Z18 mini can boast of hardware and photography. So it’s a great offer for young customers who are looking for cost-effective smartphones. On the contrary, the Meizu 15 has a real advantage of operating system optimization. Plus, it sports the same hardware. Probably, it will be chosen by Meizu fans mainly.
