Meizu Gravity Review: An Illusion of Floating in the Air

On August 8, 2018, Meizu held a new product launch conference in Beijing. At the event, it uncovered two smartphones in face of the Meizu 16 and Meizu 16 Pro. But there was another astonishing product, namely the Meizu Gravity Bluetooth speaker.

When speaking about Meizu, we should divide its history into two – before 2018 and after 2018. What the company has been doing until 2018 causes many questions. As a result, it turned south. But this year, we have already seen many amazing products coming our way from this brand. And we just have to mention the Meizu POP wireless earbuds as well as the Meizu HALO laser Bluetooth Headphones. Both products were made to compete with the top brands. They are not going to dethrone the market leaders, but the latter will meet a tough competition.

Meizu Gravity Speaker

As we said, just a couple of days ago, Meizu introduced another audio product, which actually evokes memories. The design of the Meizu Gravity speaker is very eye-catching. So let’s take a look at how this speaker works.

Meizu Gravity Design

The Meizu Gravity speaker was designed jointly with a Japanese young designer Kosho Tsuboi. He used the ‘missing design’ concept to introduce the prism structure into the design of the speaker. Through the high light transmittance, the light passes through the prism, giving the speaker an illusion of floating in the air.

This 92% translucent prism is the support point for the entire speaker, as well as its display. Through the principle of light refraction, the user can see what is projected on the screen on the slightly inclined plane in front.

In the middle on the front, the main body of the Meizu Gravity suspension speaker is the black cuboid. The upper and lower parts are made of aluminum alloy clips, and the middle part is made out of nylon fabric. However, this coating is not the same as the common materials on the smart speakers. The woven texture is very detailed and more textured.

The Meizu logo is located on the side where the speaker is suspended.

The button is located behind the speaker. It is flat. So you can distinguish it only when touching. The four buttons there are made of rubber and will be rebound if you press them. Next to the button are the AUX IN connector and power connector.

The details of the product are hidden at the bottom of the fuselage. Through the reflective structure of the prism, even the font has a feeling of floating in the air. On it, we can read the product model is Gravity A8 and the input power is 15V/3A.

Meizu Gravity Speaker

Generally, the Meizu Gravity suspension speaker is not a common portable speaker we used to see. Gravity’s artistic attributes are obviously stronger. Its usage scene is more fixed, such as desks, bedside tables, etc. It is more suitable for leisure time to cultivate the sentiment. The Gravity is like a quiet and elegant person, elegant and yet graceful. So we guess it’s mainly made for those who like classical music and minimalistic design style.

The overall size is 262×112×58 mm, and the weight is about 1033 g. The Meizu Gravity speaker supports Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and AUX. At the same time, the signal-to-noise ratio is higher than 80 dB, and the frequency response is 70-20 kHz. The Meizu Gravity has been doing sound debugging for more than a year, with a single manual assembly worker for up to 11 hours.

Meizu Gravity Performance

The Meizu Gravity’s interfaces are located on the back of the fuselage. In addition to the need to connect the power cord, there is also an AUX IN interface. Users can connect to a PC, Mac or smartphone for music playback via the included AUX-IN audio cable.

After accessing the power, the Meizu Gravity will prompt you to download the app for network pairing on the screen. Currently, the app is only available for Android smartphones, and iOS is temporarily unavailable.

After downloading and completing the installation, just enter the WiFi password in the app. Once entered the app, you will receive a version 2.2 update. After the update is complete, you can see the current main interface.

The screen above the Meizu Gravity is 3 inches in size. When connected to WiFi to play songs, there will be music album cover display and song information on the screen. Since the prism has a light-transmissive property, there is a feeling that the information floats in the air, which is more noticeable after the night light is turned off.

Meizu Gravity Speaker

Inside, it is using Texas Instruments professional power amplifier chip TAS5754M to ensure high-precision sound reproduction. The THD distortion rate is less than 0.007%. There is also a Dirac Power Sound audio enhancement technology.

Meizu Gravity Audio Experience

When the Meizu Gravity was originally designed, Meizu spent a lot of time on the height of the speaker. The main purpose was to balance the beauty and sound quality.

Meizu Gravity Speaker

If the upper and lower heights are too high, it can accommodate the speaker with better sound quality, but it will affect the suspension effect of the product itself. And if the height is not enough, it cannot meet the most demanding needs.

Meizu Gravity Speaker

That’s why Meizu put two new custom 40mm full-range speakers in the body of the Gravity. The maximum output power reached 20W. And in order to improve the bass performance, the passive unit inside the speaker uses a higher-cost rubber edge material and the overall acoustic design of the dual film resonance + dual drive unit.

As for the final playback effect, the Meizu Gravity is paired with a phone through a WiFi connection. Actually, the three bands of high, medium and low are balanced. The whole performance is clean and bright. The recognition of the instruments is relatively high, and the high-frequency resolution is impressive. Compared with other products of the same type, the overall performance is still very competitive.

The Bottom Line

Actually, to describe the Meizu Gravity speaker, we decided to provide three selling points:

1. Cool suspension design

The most impressive feature of the Meizu Gravity is its appearance. Through a prismatic structure with high light transmittance, it looks like this product is floating in the air. However, it is hard to imagine the difficulty of processing the prism structure. This is one of the reasons why Gravity may appear on shortage.

2. Balanced sound quality performance

In the same level of speakers, there are many products with good sound. But there are not many with good designs. As for the Meizu Gravity floating speaker, in the premise of ensuring the sound quality, the appearance can also make people shine.

3. Support for a variety of audio sources

The Meizu Gravity is equipped with an AUX IN interface, and also supports WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity. So you can connect it to anything you want.
