Is the Xiaomi Mi Watch worth its price tag? Check here to find out

A few days ago, Chinese manufacturing giant, Xiaomi, released the Xiaomi CC9 Pro (Xiaomi Mi Note 10) which is the first smartphone with a 108MP five rear camera. However, this smartphone was not alone in the conference. The company also released its first-ever watch, Xiaomi Mi Watch. Don’t be confused please, other Xiaomi watches come from third-party brands like Amazfit or Huami but this watch is the FIRST watch from Xiaomi directly. The Xiaomi Mi Watch could be considered as a small smartphone because it provides a complete list of elements for offline calls: eSIM module, built-in microphone, and speaker. In addition, the Mi Watch supports a full range of wireless interfaces (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS, and even NFC). If you are outside China, you can get this watch for $285.99. However, is it worth the price?? This is what we will extensively look at in this post. We will grade the subsections from 1 – 5 with 1 the lowest and 5 the highest. So grab a pint of beer and enjoy this review

Xiaomi Watch Design & Appearance (4)

Many who knows Xiaomi, are aware that the company has a penchant for Apple designs. The Xiaomi Watch features a four-curved sapphire glass design and has close proximity to Apple Watch. It will come in Black and Silver colours with matching bands. Notably, there is an Apple Watch-like crown on the right side, with a second button right below it.

The smartwatch comes with a square touchscreen display protected by sapphire glass. The back of the watch is made out of ceramic. There’s a crown on the right to navigate through the watch UI. Also, there’s a multi-purpose button as well as a microphone on the right side. On the left, you have another microphone hole along with a speaker vent. The Mi Watch features an aluminum alloy body with a matte finish, but it has sharper curves than the Apple Watch. At the bottom, you’ll see the pins for the charging dock and the heart rate monitor.

Reason for grade: The design is not really original and it copies Apple Watch. Well, at first glance, anybody would think that you are wearing an Apple watch.

Hardware & Display (5)

The Xiaomi Mi Watch comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 3100 4G chip featuring four Cortex A7 cores clocked at 1.2GHz. It independently supports GPS, and NFC, plus an eSIM virtual card, so you can independently make voice calls via the device. In addition, this watch uses an independent linear motor and independent speakers, built-in high-capacity battery, and it comes with support for independent Wi-Fi / Bluetooth.

The technical specs of the Xiaomi Mi Watch also include a 1.78″ AMOLED display (326ppi, like the Apple Watch 5). The watch has a battery of 570mAh, much bigger than its competitors. The company claims the Mi Watch can last up to 36 hours or up to two days on a single charge.

Reason for grade: What else would a smartwatch want? You got a sizeable display, good battery, and features like NFC with the latest Bluetooth 5.0. Hey guys, there is nothing more

Software (5)

The Xiaomi Mi watch runs a proprietary custom MIUI for Watch but this system is based on Google’s WearOS. There is also a set of classic functions for smartwatches, including heart rate monitoring, the ability to control physical activity and sleep and display notifications from a smartphone. It is possible to listen to music from the watch, it has 4 GB of internal memory. This system is a version of MIUI with its own app store.

According to the general manager of Xiaomi Ecological Chain, this new Watch can run apps such as Sogou map, WeChat, Alipay, Himalayan, navigator, vibrato and many other programs. Do note, however, that due to the limited screen and storage sizes, the Mi Watch might not support the installation of regular Android apps. So these apps are basically the lightweight versions of the regular Android Apps.

Xiaomi’s upcoming Watch also comes with multiple functions like independent music, offline payments through Alipay, send and receive QQ information; navigation can automatically import trips, Xiao AI, taxi booking, etc.

Reason for grade: Google WearOS has not really been a success like WatchOS from Apple. Xiaomi knew this thus it has to modify the WearOS and included a lot of functions which makes operation easier. I think Xiaomi has done really well with the software end

Xiaomi Watch Price and Availability (5)

This is probably the best part of the Xiaomi Mi Watch. This watch is currently available on Gearbest for $285.00. However, its competition which are Apple Watch Series 5  and Samsung Galaxy Watch LTE sell for 4299 yuan ($611) and 2499 yuan ($355) respectively (these are launch prices, on third-party stores, they could be $200 more expensive) The Mi Watch is obviously a cheaper alternative.

Reason for grade: This is obvious

Final Verdict

Looking at the design, appearance, hardware, software, and price of the recently released Xiaomi Mi Watch, I will say that it is the BEST bargain that you can ever have. In addition, though this its the company’s first direct smartwatch, it has tons of watches from Amazfit and Huami thus Xiaomi is quite experienced in the smartwatch business

Final Grade: 4.75

I have been a strong follower of Android devices since the release of Android Ice Cream Sandwich. Right now, Chinese tech completely fascinates me because they are probably the only manufacturers who tries to merge budget and specs.
