Huawei, a smartphone manufacturer who is just now emerging from the Chinese market to the rest of the world. Huawei’s Honor series being the most popular series in the entire product line, is not a surprise. As of June this year Huawei has released 7 smartphones in this series, with hight hopes of quality, premium experience, and very decent pricing. And Today again, they announced another such product, the Huawei Honor Play 5X.
Let’s look at the overall technical configuration of the Huawei Honor Play 5X, which is equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 615, eight-core 64-bit processor, 3GB RAM + 16GB ROM internal memory combinations, equipped with a fingerprint identification 2.0 system, equipped with 5.5 inches Full HD 1080P Full HD AMOLED, 5 mega-pixel front +13 mega=pixel rear camera combination, ships with Android 5.1 Lollipop out of the box, with Huawei’s own, optimized depth EMUI 3.1 system, and equipped with a 3000mAh built-in lithium battery.
Prices of the Huawei Honor Play 5X are : the mobile version (2GB + 16GB) price of 999 yuan $160 USD, the entire network edition (3GB + 16GB) price of 1399 yuan $220 USD.
Purely from the technocal specification configuration point of view, compared to the Honor 4X, the Honor 5X is a very significant upgrade, then how is the actual performance? Here we take a look at the tests we put the 5X through, and see how it performs.
Appearance : All-Metal Construction
The Huawei Honor Play 5X is completely built out of metal, which is a specially selected aircraft-grade aluminum, and is made using a high-speed CNC Diamond Knife for precise cuts. The Play 5X also has a brished metal finish on the back, which is a bit raised for extra grip while using the phone.
The Huawei Honor Play 5X also has a matte finish all over the body which is created using a special sandblasting process, which helps reduce the fingerprints and increase the grip, which is an advantage for people who don’t want to use a case or a skin on their phone.
The Huawei Honor Play 5X measures at 151.3 x 76.3 x 8.15mm, weighs about 158-Grams, and comes in Gold, Dark Grey, and Silver colors to choose from. All of the colors offer a premium finish and feel and look great with the awesome business and classy look.
The Huawei Honor Play 5X has a 5.5-inch Full-HD 1080P HD AMOLED Display with a special bonding process, that makes the pixel level dynamic contrast adjustment function, so in various ambient situations the contrast and screen saturation will be on point. There is also a free screen protector which is pre-applied on the phone in the company for added protection.
One of the most interesting features of the Huawei Honor Play 5X is the Three-Slot Design. There are slots for one Nano SIM, one Micro SIM, and a Micro SD Slot, which is one of the first to do so. Dual-SIM, Dual-Standby, along with Expandable memory, which just makes the deal even sweeter.
The Huawei Honor Play 5X has a large 3000mAh Battery, and has support for a 2-Amp charger, which can significantly reduce the charging time. Official documentation from Huawei shows that the moderate usage of upto almost two days; and for heavy users, one full day.
Specs and Performance
The Huawei Honor Play 5X is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 Processor, which is an octa-core processor. While the processor is using the 28nanometer processor technology, both the low-power and high performance characteristics. The Snapdragon 615 Processor is an eight-core, ARM Cortex-A53 architecture, which houses four 1.7GHz Cores + Four 1.0GHz Cores, and has an Adreno 405 GPU.
The Huawei Honor Play 5X with it’s 3GB of RAM, and 16GB of internal storage is an amazing combination, 3GB RAM for an Android phone is plenty especially for Lollipop.
The software we used to Test the synthetic benchmarks of the device are, Vellamo Browser Performance, which is evaluated in the Android System. This test module can be used to assess the HTML5 movile web rendering performance, Vellamo can scroll, zoom, test 3D Graphics, Video Playback, Memory Access, Bandwidth, Peak Performance, and many other aspects.
The gaming performance of the Plau 5X can’t be replicated in pictures, so, you just have to take out word for it. We played a lot of Racers, FPS, and Graphicly Intensive Games which require a lot of horse power, and the Play 5X just flies through it. Everything runs smoothly, and there is no frame drops anywhere in the game.
Software : EMUI 3.1
The Huawei Honot Play 5X runs on Android 5.1 Lollipop on which Huawei has their own custom Skin EMUI Version 3.1, which has a few tricks up it’s sleeve. The UI very consistent and simple in all aspects, and has a very simple and effective UI style, which is equipped with a more intelligent scene function, like the all-new music playback, which has support for song collections, and intelligent sorting into genre’s, auto lyric download, and show it while the song is playing and more interesting functions.
Some of the new functions in EMUI 3.1 features include, admin user in any page, two finger gesture to show any hidden application which is running in the background, along with advanced security features, guest mode, and other functions, can achieve all-round multi-level, protection of user privacy and security.
Camera Performance and Samples
Front Facing Camera on the Huawei Honor Play 5X is a 5-Megaixel Samsung-made camera with F/2.4 Aperture, 22mm wide angle, and the pixel size is 1.4um, which means that the photos in low light will be very good. The camera also has self timer, and timelapse modes to make the experience even sweeter. The back facing camera is a 13-Mega Pixel sensor with F/2.0 aperture, and is a 28mm wide-angle lens. Huawei also included a Wisdon 3.0 Photo processing engine which makes the quality even better on the back facing camera. Take a look at the images below for samples.
Admittedly, the Huawei Honor Play 5X is very similar to it’s previous model, the 4X, in many ways like the specs, and the 5X is a very good upgrade, the key factor is the price of both the phones, the 5X’s price had to be higher for the specs Huawei is offering in this package.
For users who can afford the phone, the Huawei Honor Play 5X is a wonderful pickup. It has a lot of workmanship gone into it, to make the experience sweet. Everything from the build to the software, is very refined and feels like a finished product. The camera, and the photo pricessing engine, specs, display, and the build are on point, and will please every buyer for sure. If you already own the 4X, this is a very good upgrade.
