Huawei is well known for their Smartphones and other electronics around the world. However, they have not been that active in the fitness and tracking industry, and Huawei is aiming to change that with the Huawei Honor Bracelet AF500 Smartband fitness tracker.
Design, Build and Comfort
Huawei had ans still has one of the best designs when it comes to Smartphones, and that reflects in the design language of the Huawei Honor Bracelet.
Huawei AF500 consists of a rubber band which encases the LED display and all other components used for tracking (set within a touch screen button). The Huawei AF500 smart band is available in black, red and green colors all of which are very attractive, taking into account the lively and sedate two styles.
Overall the band is very comfortable to wear, and is very sturdy. The rubber used is very high quality and will last very long. The Band is very comfortable to wear all day, and all night. The rubber material feels very good on the skin. The band does collect some dust with time, but should be absolutely fine with some occational cleaning. The band’s clasp is also very sturdy, and will not fall off even when doing some vigorous exercising like jogging or running.
Functions and Features
The Huawei Honor Bracelet uses a dot-matrix display which has various functions like, show steps count, calorie count and of course time. However, with a companion app on your phone, the band can also show notifications from your phone. When someone is calling you, or when you get a message. You can also use the band as a remote shutter for your phones camera.
There is also a button on the bracelet which helps you to cycle through all the menus. The Huawei Honor Bracelet also has some smart features like, Find-my-phone through which you can find your phone by making it ring remotely using the bracelet. Similarly, if you leave your phone behind, the Honor Bracelet can alert you that you have left your phone.
While these features are very impressive, they can be inconsistant sometimes, depending on the bluetooth signal strength and the phone’s security features blocking the companion app from pushing notifications to the band.
Activity and Sleep Tracking
The Honor Bracelet is advertised as an activity tracker, and the tracking results can be inaccurate at times. To test this out, I have used a Xiaomi Mi Band alongside with the Honor Bracelet, and both the trackers showed wildly different tracking results.
While sometimes the Mi band showed I was active, the Honor Bracelet shows that I barely even did anything. That applied to both the Sleep Tracking as well as fitness tracking. Yes, the Mi band is not that accurate either, but, I was surprised to see the wild difference.
I have tried out wearing the Honor Band on the other hand, it became more accurate. I hope that this is something Huawei can fix with an OTA software update like what Xiaomi did with the Mi band.
The Huawei Honor Bracelet is a very good activity tracker, with some additional features bundled in, which one would only find in Smartwatches which cost more than two times. Yes, this tracker is not very accurate, but that is not something Huawei cannot fix with an OTA down the line.
So, is this something worth picking up? Yes, given its features like, push notifications, remote shutter, and activity tracking at just under $90 USD you really can’t go wrong. However if you are a fitness freak, I suggest you go for something more extreme. If you are just getting into the fitness and tracking, this is a wonderful first fitness tracker.
