The device is protected with a plastic case, which is a plus, considering safe transport, and there is another screen protection glass for the front side. A quick start guide is provided alongside with the Micro USB cable, pin for the sim slot, and the AC power adapter. There are no headphones included in the packaging – the manufacturer follows the trend of leaving out the headphones in the packaging.
Design & Features
The design of the Cubot S550 is quite surprising and very pleasant to the eye. This ultra – thin model (7 mm thickness) weighs 159g and fits well in your hand, considering its size; the weight is balanced evenly. Its design is similar to previous Cubot series, and the front side resembles on Huawei Mate models.
Capacitive buttons are placed at the bottom, and they are quite visible during the day, but you may have problems at nighttime.
The front camera is at the top of the device, paired with the speaker and the ambient sensors and notification light. A standard 3.5mm audio jack is on top of the device. Cubot S550 is made of metal, with smoothly polished surfaces using advanced CNC technology. On the rear side, we have 13MP camera and LED flash, a big fingerprint scanner, positioned like on LG models, with the company logo at the bottom.
It comes in black and white, and the overall impression of the design is quite modern and elegant, looking like it is more expensive than it actually is.
The display of this model is quite incredible considering the price. We can describe Cubot S 550 display as one the best features of this phone.
Cubot S550 packs 5.5 inch IPS screen, with 1280 x 720 (HD 720p) pixels resolution, which is somewhat behind the industry standards today. Pixel density is 267 ppi; not quite like the amazing 441 ppi of the Cubot X17, but fair enough for the price. The display has great viewing angles, and daylight performance – but don’t expect stellar performance on direct sunlight.
Multi- touch is also incorporated, and it works perfectly fine, enabling clicks and double clicks. Also, one of the pros of this model is the Corning Gorilla Glass 3, maximizing the safety of the screen. This technology is advertised to withstand direct strikes from your keys in the pocket, or some sharp objects. Additional protection cover for the screen comes with the package.
Processor and Storage
Design and display are important, but the essential specs and features are definitely under the hood.
The hardware features are presented firstly by the beating heart of the model, the 64-bit Quad-Core Mediatek MT6735 processor, working at the speed of 1.3 GHz.
Seems like a big surprise to use a quad-core processor, since octa-core is dominating the market. The reason behind this move is energy efficiency; low-frequency quad-core processors tend to save energy.
Cubot S550 is quite good for gameplay, thanks to the ARM Mali T720 graphics processor. The smartphone runs smooth, with no lags, even if you want to play games with higher requirements.
Internal storage is 16GB – which is decent, plus 2GB of RAM. You can expand the memory by inserting a MicroSD card (up to 32GB).
The new Cubot S550 has a dual camera system, with 13MP at the back, and 8MP at the front. 8MP (4P lens) front camera was a significant upgrade since cheaper models often have cameras with smaller sensors. That is great for your selfies, and video calls.
The rear camera has a 13MP lens, equipped with LED flash and packs features like face detection, beauty app, and panorama view. The camera uses an Omni Vision OV8865 low power consumption sensor, including Omni BSI-2TM to improve the dynamic range. Also, you can capture videos at [email protected] with no problems.

This is an excellent choice if you are looking for a phone with a quality camera, and the best thing is that you will not have to pay a fortune for it.
Operating System (OS)
Cubot S 550 uses a unique user interface, built on the Android operating system called Lollipop that is a standard OS nowadays. Maybe it will have a possibility to update to Android 6.0 Marshmallow, but we will have to wait and see.
The system runs smooth with no lags, ensuring the best user experience as possible. It is quite fast and stable for an affordable model. 2GB of RAM is sufficient for operating with no problems, but this is a decreased amount considering previous models (X16, X17) which feature 3GB of RAM.
In general, we can describe the user experience as fast and smooth, even when multitasking.
This model has dual SIM card support, using Micro-SIM, and it also enables dual stand by. An opening pin for the sim card slot is provided on the packaging.
A Micro-USB connection is used to transfer data from your PC. A Bluetooth 4.0 version is also incorporated for you, to connect with your friend’s smartphones and share data, or connect Bluetooth headsets.
Cubot s 550 uses three different network technologies:
2G: GSM 850/900/1800/1900MHz
3G: WCDMA 900/2100MHz
4G: FDD-LTE: 800/1800/2100/2600MHz
A 4G network is a great asset, considering that this is one of the affordable models, and you can experience fast download and upload speed up to 150 Mbps and 50 Mbps.
The power of the new Cubot S550 is fueled with a massive non–removable Lithium Polymer 3000mAh battery. Compared to the Cubot X16, which has a 2500mAh battery; this model can last up to 25 hours of talk time. That is quite impressive since we are talking about a cheaper model than the previous series.
We tested the battery, and we found out that during normal usage, the battery can last up to two days top. When it comes to charging time, you will need three full hours to recharge the battery completely.
Cubot S550 Additional Features
Other features that Cubot S550 supports are Proximity Sensor, Ambient Light Sensor, Gravity Sensor, and the modern fingerprint sensor. The fingerprint sensor is situated at the back of the device. Only 0.3 seconds are needed for the fingerprint scanner to unlock your phone, no matter how you place your finger since it works in every position (360°, all angles).
Google Play is supported, enabling you to download all your favorite games and apps.
Standard features like calendar, MP3 & MP4 player, calculator and FM radio, are already incorporated into the device and ready to use straight out of the box. Considering everything, a well-balanced specs and features are the prime attribute of the new Cubot S 550.
