CUBOT NOTE S Review – A Marathon Runner

Cubot Note S is a mid-range phablet aimed at younger generations. It has high specs coupled with more than a reasonable price tag, a combination tough to beat. The phablet market was reserved for business features and functionality. A Younger population usually didn’t have the possibility to afford the big screen, and enjoy the advantages. This model is aimed to solve this situation, and we will get to see how successful Cubot was in creating an affordable, but reliable device which can provide hours of fun and functionality.   Cubot Note S front and back side, featured image

Packaging

After opening the box that phone came in you will find the standard equipment. USB cable and charger, a manual written in English, battery and phone. Sadly, headphones are not included in the packaging, but this is a standard for mid-range phones these days. Any 3.5mm headphones will work on this phone, so no worries there.

Design

In 2016, it is tough to be original. The biggest companies set trends, and others follow. Some of the lesser-known manufacturers even make their copies of best designed and classic phones. This is the case for Cubot Note 3 as well. Its design is very reminiscent of the Samsung’s old flagship phone, Galaxy S 3.

On the brighter side, the phone is very well built. Made out of quality plastic and metal it seems quite durable. On the front side of the phone, the first thing you’ll notice is that great looking screen with little to no bezels on the side. Below the screen there are capacitive buttons, and above we find the front camera, earphone, and sensors.

On the back side of the phone, there is a removable cover made out of glossy plastic. The cover is prone to fingerprints, but it is not as slippery as the one may think. The great thing about this phone is that you can choose the customized back cover and make the phone truly your own. There is a company logo on the cover, and above the logo, there is a camera in the upper left corner, paired with a single LED flash. Under the cover, there is a large battery, dual SIM card slots, and micro SD card slot.Design of the Cubot Note S from the back, held in hands

On the upper end of the phone, there is a standard micro USB port for charging and file transfer and 3.5mm headphone jack. On the right side of the phone, there are a power button and volume up and down buttons.

Display

Cubot Note S comes with a 5.5-ich IPS display. Colors appear a bit colder, but the display itself is great to look at, especially because of a good contrast ratio. It has great viewing angles and a 720p HD resolution. Some would say that 720p is too low for this display size, but we believe that this is a compromise for a better battery life. The display of Cubot Note S at front, turned on

Overall, the screen is good, and it will serve you well for browsing the web and enjoining a movie or two.

Performance and features

Cubot Note S is equipped with MediaTek Quad-Core processor that is clocked on 1.3GHz. In charge of graphically intensive tasks is Mali T-400MP GPU. The device has 2GB of RAM memory and 16GB onboard storage. In case you need more storage for your multimedia or games, you can put an additional 32GB with the micro SD card. As all MediaTek mid-range chipsets this one performs well. It will not break records on benchmarking apps but on a day-to-day usage, it will serve you well without lag and stuttering. You can play the latest games from the Google Play Store, but performance may vary at some demanding titles.

The feature worth mentioning is certainly Air control 2.0; by waving in front of the front camera and light sensor you can unlock the phone. Also, when you put the phone close to an ear, it will answer the call automatically. Silencing the incoming call by putting the phone on display is a neat feature as well.

Camera

The camera lens of the Cubot Note S

The device features dual cameras, one on the front and one on the back. The front camera is 2MP, but it is software interpolated to 5MP. The camera on the back has a 5MP resolution, and it is interpolated to 8MP, and it has 1A LED flash next to it. The camera interface is very straightforward. There are few modes to choose, like a regular photo, HDR photo, panorama and face beauty. Also, worth of mentioning is the focus tracking mode. By holding an object on the screen, you will lock the focus on it. When you move the phone, that object will always be in focus.

Generally, the camera is nothing spectacular, but you can get some decent shots when you learn how to use it correctly. There is a fair amount of details, but images are a bit noisy. The flash aids low light shots – expect you won’t get a decent shot without it.

Battery

We came to the most important aspect of this phone, and that is its battery. Cubot Note S is equipped with Lithium-Ion Polymer battery with the capacity of impressive 4150mAh. Manufacturer states that you can use this phone at least two days in most scenarios. After using this phone for a week straight we conclude that they are entirely right. Even if you are a power user, you will have troubles of “killing” this battery in a single day. We’re talking several hours of browsing over the Wi-Fi, couple of phone calls and SMS, taking a few pictures and videos, with mail syncing every hour and listening to some music. The device was able to last day and a half, and that is an excellent score.
