This tablet came in a plain looking cardboard package. Nothing special about it. It is strong enough for delivering device at your doorstep without damaging it. Inside of the box, there is a tablet and a charger.
The standard Chinese/English manual is there as well, and bubble wrap protects the device.
Some might say that this device resembles Microsoft’s Surface Pro line of products. On one hand, they are right, it does. On the other hand, if you strive for perfection, you will look up to Surface Pro’s design cause it’s one of the finest on the market.
Cube i9 is beautifully designed and crafted device. Made out of magnesium alloy, it is one tough piece of art.
On the front of the device, there is a great looking 12.2-inch screen, front facing 2 Megapixel camera, charging indicator, a microphone port, and Home key. The back side of the tablet is housed by a 5 Megapixel camera and a kickstand.
On the top, there is a power button and volume up and down buttons. On the bottom of the device, there are holes and docking station for the additional magnetic keyboard (Yes, just like a Surface Pro).By the way, the keyboard is an optional hardware, and you have to buy it separately. Both Silver and Deep Blue variations look modern and premium. On the left side of the Cube, there are USB ports, charging port, card slot, 3.5mm audio jack for earphone and loudspeaker. The left side houses only loudspeaker.
Here is one of the official photos with features and design:
Simplicity at its best.
i9 has a 12.2-inch capacitive (10-point touch) IPS display with the resolution of 1920×1200. Tablet’s 16:10 ratio is ideal for multimedia consumption. The screen is very bright and offers good contrast and viewing angles as well as good sunlight readability.
It is not protected from scratches, so applying a screen protector is recommended.
Some other companies offer displays with greater PPI but, we believe that this resolution perfectly fits this size, and it is kind on the battery as well.
Performance and Storage
Cube i9 has a 6th generation Core M3-6Y30 Skylake chipset from Intel. It is a Dual-Core processor clocked at 1.5GHz (with the ability to boost it to 2.2Ghz) and made in 14nm process technology. It offers an impressive 40% jump in performance over the previous generations of CPU-s. Another good thing is lower power consumption.
Accompanying the CPU, its GPU is equally impressive. It is a 9th generation LP HD515 processor. The device comes with 4GB of DDR3 RAM and 128GB ultra-fast ROM. Internal memory is quickly expanded with a micro SD card of up to 128GB.
We haven’t encountered a single bug or skipped frame using this incredible gadget. You can enjoy watching FULL HD and 4K movies, browsing the web, playing graphically intensive games and be very productive with this machine, effortlessly.
This Ultrabook has two cameras. One on the front and one on the back of the device. The front one is 2mp while the main camera is 5mp. This sorts of devices are not known for the camera quality, and this is the case with a Cube i9 also. Its camera is average at best. Granted that you get excellent details in proper lighting conditions, night shots are a way too noisy. Front facing camera is ok for selfies and HD Skype conversations.
Overall, it is better to use your smartphone for the shots of the situations, and people you want to remember.
Here are some samples taken with our review unit:
Cube i9 runs on fully featured Windows 10. You can run in a tablet mode or attach an optional keyboard and use it like a regular laptop. Of course, you are getting all the goodies of Windows 10 OS. Things like Cortana, your personal assistant; fast and secure Edge browser; the great Groove music, for listening and buying songs of your desire; Xbox live, for playing games online with your friends; full Microsoft Office suite, for working and writing and many more features. Of course, you can install and run every game or app that comes in Windows store.
Only downsides are that keyboard does not come with the tablet, and you have to buy it separately and the fact that there is no stylus included. Don’t get me wrong, you can do everything you want to do with the use of your fingers. The thing is, every major company offers stylus with their products of this sort.
Using the tablet with the keyboard is definitely an advantage, and the manufacturers should make a bundle package.
Battery and Connectivity
This device comes with 8.7V, 2x5000mAh non-removable batteries. With moderate usage, you can use it for a whole day. While playing intensive 3D games and watching movies in high-definition battery lasted 5-6 hours which is a good result.
On the connectivity side, this tablet is great. It has standard Wi-Fi connectivity of 802.11 b/g/n and Bluetooth 4.0. You also get one USB 3.0 port for faster transfer rates and latest and grates USB Type-C port for even faster transfer of files.
The Cube i9 tablet is a finished product. Full installment of Windows 10 provides a plethora of features, and possibilities:
- Rich Multimedia support – all types of multimedia files
- Full Office package – Document editing, image editing, presentations, videos. All is covered.
- Gravity Sensor – Enhancing the usage and multimedia consumption and gaming.
Pros and Cons
In this part of the review, we will try to sum it all up for you in a few lines. The good and the bad.
- Great industrial design and build quality
- Intel processor, 6th generation
- Good looking display with a decent resolution
- Full Windows 10 OS
- Fair price
- Doesn’t have a stylus
- You don’t get a keyboard in the box and have to buy it separately
Cube i9 is a great machine. Combined with good externals and internals and more than a fair price (in comparison, the base model of the Surface Pro 4 is two times more expensive) it is a good catch for everyone that want a portable device that won’t fail you. The only shame is that you have to buy keyboard separately but, given the price, it is not so big of a deal.
You can purchase this device on the links below and see for yourselves that brand name is not everything.
