Creality CR-X Review: A Dual-Extrusion 3D Printer

The most popular 3D printer made in China should be considered the Creality CR-10. It was categorized as an industrial 3D printer, which simply means it provides an enormous print area. Apart from this, the CR-10 came with a 0.4mm nozzle at a maximum resolution of 100 microns. There is also a heated bed spreading the heat across the glass print surface. Creality CR-X Advantages

The Creality CR-X comes with a new print head design that channels two filament feeds through a single nozzle. As you guess, it’s called a dual extrusion. And this is the first dual extruder 3D printer for Creality.

The Creality CR-X uses a fused deposition modeling (FDM), in which, a filament—composed of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), polylactic acid (PLA), or another thermoplastic—is melted and deposited through a heated extrusion nozzle in layers. This system is used to print clean breaks between the materials. There are two spool holders mounted atop the CR-X feed into two extruders. They are situated on both ends of the X-axis rail. This is where two filaments pass through PTFE tubes into a single Y-splitter feeding into the printer’s hot end, before extrusion through a single 0.4mm nozzle.

The Creality CR-X has a print area of 300 x 300 x 400mm, similar to that of the CR-10. However, there is a coated glass bed that is ‘copied’ from Anycubic’s Ultrabase. Though Creality describes it as a ‘carboloy silicon printing platform’, we are sure it’s a marketing gimmick and nothing special.

The print bed’s travel along the Y-axis is well supported, with the load spread and running over dual 2020 extrusions on eight pulleys. What we like most is lone ribbon cable connecting the base unit to the X-axis stepper, dual extruders, and hot end. It keeps things neat and tidy when the machine is in operation.

In order to interact with the 3D printer, Creality has opted for a 4-inch color LCD touchscreen, which is placed in the front and center on the base unit.

The Z-axis motion is handled by a belt-driven dual lead screw getup. A single stepper motor provides the power directly to the left lead screw, with a toothed pulley and belt system, in turn, driving a second lead screw on the right-hand side of the printer.
