A few weeks ago, we learned that Coolpad filed a lawsuit against Xiaomi in China, accusing the latter of violating a couple of their patents. The case was filed through the Coolpad subsidiary, Yulong Computer Technology, before a Shenzhen court. A spokesman for the Shenzhen-based smartphone maker has insisted that Xiaomi must stop selling and manufacturing devices that infringe many of its patents to end this huge legal dispute.
What is Coolpad trying to do?
In an interview, IANS reports, that Coolpad’s Chief Patent Officer, Nancy Zhang, said that the company “was hoping that Xiaomi would put an end to patent infringement.” She said that Coolpad is ready to actively cooperate with Xiaomi to promote the industrial progress of both companies, but that the infraction that is taking place should cease. The smartphone manufacturer hopes to work with Xiaomi to find a better solution, strengthen the protection of intellectual property and create a kind business environment.
Coolpad also revealed that one of their patents involved on the case includes the dual-SIM-card-dual-standby technology. The three patents that Xiaomi apparently infringed include system interaction, which involve icon configuration, interfaces and applications, whose features are really visible in certain phones. This company said that has also applied for custom protection for two of its patents, which are: “method of a collaboration of mobile telecommunication devices and their interface system” and “implementation method for a multi-model mobile device call history interface system”
This is what Coolpad demands from Xiaomi
It should be remembered that Coolpad also requires a ban on both manufacturing and sales of specific Xiaomi phones that infringe such patents. The phones that could be banned include the Mi Mix, Redmi Note 4X, Mi 6, Mi Max 2, Mi Note 3, Redmi Note 5, Redmi 5 Plus and Mi 5X. At this point, Coolpad is also seeking compensation from Xiaomi for their economic losses.
