CHUWI Herobox Mini PC Review: Comparison with its predecessor the GBox Pro

Chuwi has recently released its next-generation of mini PC, the Chuwi HeroBox.  It leaves the aluminum body and fan-lessness of the popular GBox Pro on Banggood as it is. In addition, compared to its predecessor, the CPU significantly changed from Atom X7-E3950 to Gemini Lake N4100. RAM from 4GB to 8GB, storage from 64GB eMMC to 180GB SSD. Overall, its a product with improved specifications.

Recently we have received this HeroBox from CHUWI, so we will describe its appearance and functionality, benchmark score, and usability. The Gemini Lake N4100 processor works crisply for everyday use. Also, because it’s fanless, it’s completely silent and has a high heat dissipation effect.

System information:

Next, we have the Windows 10 settings, system information, and benchmark score. Also, it turns out that Chuwi is using an SSD made bu Intel.

The device and Windows specifications in the setting items of Windows 10. Of course, there are Gemeni Lake N4100 and 8GB of memory according to the specifications.

From here, you can see the device informations. First, I thought that SSD is unusual with 180GB, but there is something made by Intel.

Appearance and function

One of the key advantages of the CHUWI HeroBox Mini PC definetly includes its fanless system. For achieving this, a large heat sink made of aluminum is provided. In addition, the whole body of the device is also made of aluminum, which helps in heat dissipation and sinking.

All the accessories, except the user manual. Packaging also includes hardware to attach to the back of a TV but does not include an HDMI cable.

When power is on, a Blue LED light appears on the front. The top plate is likely to be slightly greasy with hands or the like.

In most of the mini PCs, the combination of HDMI x 2 or HDMI port can be seen. However, the latest HeroBox Mini PC offers a combination of HDMI and D-Sub. In addition, you can also connect it to Monitor output using its USB Type-C port.

Also, the device also features a reset button, which you can see in the picture below. This helps whenever your device hangs or freezes while working.

Benchmark score

Gemini Lake N4100 is not a CPU that can handle the load, so I ran it with a Geekbench score.

Geekbench 4 above, Geekbench 5 below.

CPU temperature and cooling effect are doing well here . Even when running the benchmark, the maximum temperature is only 71 ?. With the same specifications above, the fanless Alfawise T1 heats up the body, but the HeroBox does not feel any heat on the body . Cooling with the following large heat sink, this effect is great.

CHUWI HeroBoxThis time we did not check the interior for the borrowed product, but in this way the large aluminum heat sink enhances the heat dissipation effect. In addition, since the body is made of aluminum, fanless operation is realized by performing heat dissipation on the whole.

Measured IntelDisk 180GB SATA SSD benchmark with CrystalDiskMark. The score is the same level or slightly higher than the general SSD.

CHUWI HeroBox

We own multiple notebook PCs (eg, CHUWI LapBook SE, Jumper EZBook X4) with multiple Gemini Lake N4100 and mini PCs.

  • Clearly comfortable compared to the entry class Atom Z8350 and Apollo Lake N3350, which are often installed . Gemini Lake N4100 operates one tempo faster than the above CPUs even when displaying images on websites.
  • For light use only, there is no significant difference to the 4th generation Core i series.
  • Compared to the 5th generation Core i3-5005U, the difference is such that a slight delay is felt when displaying images.
  • It works smoothly when browsing websites and editing images of a few MB, and it is practical even with Excel files of 50 MB class.
  • However, in comparison with the 8th generation Core i series, in the load situation such as system processing after updating Windows 10, the Gemini Lake N4100 class has an abnormally high CPU usage rate, I feel.

Not limited to HeroBox, but if you want a crisp personal computer for everyday use, Gemini Lake N4100 or Apollo Lake N3450 has excellent cospa and you can experience the difference from Atom .

CHUWI HeroBox Mini PC Verdict, pricing information

HeroBox has been upgraded from GBox Pro to make it more comfortable. In the Gemini Lake N4100 class, there are many mini PCs with a CPU fan, but being fanless is also a great advantage.

In my sense, when comparing the fanless Gemini Lake and the Core i3-5005U with a loud fan sound, the former is more comfortable when used for a long time.

The key price as of January 8, 2020 is about $249.99 on Gearbest. The difference from Gearbest GBox Pro is about$90, which is not small in terms of the main unit price, but HeroBox is definitely recommended due to the difference in response.
