Unboxing

Like all Beelink products, the Beelink GT-King set-top box is well packaged in a black solid cardboard box. On the back of the box, there is a list of specifications and contact details of the manufacturer.

The kit includes:

  • Beelink GT – King TV box
  • 12V power supply with appropriate mains plug
  • Remote control
  • HDMI cable
  • User Manual in English

As always, all cables are tightened with branded cable ties.

The Beelink GT-King comes with a G10 wireless remote control that operates on a 2.4GHz radio frequency and IR. The console is not simple, but multifunctional – it supports the functions of an air mouse and voice search. For it to work, you need to insert the USB receiver into the USB port on the TV box. Voice search works very well, recognizes voice commands without problems. Just press the button with the microphone symbol and say the command. Ho By default, voice search only works in Google Chrome browser – standard Google search, that is, global voice search, for all installed applications, is not here (but thanks to the ROOT rights, it can be installed additionally). The air mouse also works great and generally makes it easier to use a TV box. The remote seems at first glance quite convenient, but in practice, flat buttons can cause some inconvenience, especially when used in the dark. To touch it is problematic to determine the necessary buttons, which are located in one plane and practically do not stand out in any way.

The console is powered by two AAA elements that need to be bought separately, they are not included. In the battery compartment cap, contacts are used, instead of spring contacts, providing a better connection. Pay attention to the polarity of the connected batteries – both batteries are inserted in the same direction.

The power supply is high enough for 12 volts 1500 mA. There were no problems with it.

TV-Box  Beelink GT-King has a classic design in the form of a black plastic box measuring 108 x 108 x 16 mm and weighing 190 grams, which is highlighted by the image of the skull above, with eyes that glow in neon green. The IR receiver is located in the front, which is used to control the console with a conventional IR remote control from Beelink.

On the left side, there are two USB 3.0 ports and a microSD memory card slot for expanding the amount of internal storage. Cards up to64 ??.

Behind the following connectors are located: power connector, third USB 2.0 port, HDMI 2.1 video output, gigabit LAN port, SPDIF optical audio output, and AV socket.

On the bottom, cover are rubber feet, a sticker with a serial number and a hole for reset, which is also used to enter the system firmware mode. There are no special ventilation diffusers.

Disassembly

The console is easily disassembled, the bottom cover is attached with snaps and can be easily removed using a mediator. The board is fixed on four screws. As always with Beelink, the board is well-designed, all necessary elements are present, including port protection. There are practically no empty places. The RESET button is actually present on the board.

Now let us pay attention to how the cooling of a rather hot processor is implemented, given that the set-top box is almost devoid of diffusers to remove hot air. A sufficiently large aluminum radiator is attached to the top cover, which is pressed against the processor through a sponge and a metal screen covering the processor chips and RAM.

And although all contiguous planes are abundantly greased with thermal grease, they are not everywhere tightly pressed to each other. The photo above shows that the metal screen, judging by the thermal paste stain, is only partially pressed against the processor, which greatly reduces the efficiency of the entire structure for heat dissipation. The use of a sponge for heat transfer, although often found in budget models, is unlikely to be effective. Looking ahead, we say that further testing will confirm our guesses – the heat removal from the processor is not implemented in the best way here.

Two WiFi antennas, eye-illumination LEDs and an EVE CR2032 CMOS lithium battery are also attached to the top cover along with the radiator.

The main elements of the board:

  • SoC Chip: Amlogic S922X
  • Ethernet chip: RTL8211F
  • WiFi chip: Ampack AP6356S
  • USB hub chip: RTS5411
  • Chip eMMC Flash Micron 8GA22 64GB
  • Spectek PS082-062BT RAM Chip on 4GB DDR4LP Type
  • LAN filter chip: AE-SC24002

Except for the design of the heat removal system from the processor, there are no more questions for the board.

Turning on

The console does not have a power button and turns on immediately when the power is connected. At the same time, green eyes light upon the skull. Programmatically disable them is not possible, but they do not shine bright and pleasant color. During system boot, a corporate skull is shown on the screen. You can turn off the console with the remote. If you hold down the power button, you can restart the console or take a screenshot of the screen.

When you turn on the console for the first time, a simple setup wizard is launched, which prompts us to set up an Internet connection, select the time zone and the main language of the system.

Unfortunately, in the new  Beelink GT-King, we do not see the new user interface, only the old and well-known from the previous TV boxes from Beelink (for example,  Beelink GT1 Ultimate ). Although recently, Beelink held a special contest for developers on the best new UI and gamepad control application for Beelink GT-King.Therefore, we hope that the new interface will appear with a new software update. The desktop consists of a large widget with a clock, several fixed icons (browser, media player, Google Play, settings and memory clearing) and a field with a + icon where we can add our shortcuts to selected applications. The system has a status bar on top, but there is no curtain itself. Below is a retractable navigation bar, from which multitasking is available, that is, switching between running applications.

Installed applications: Google play, Update, AppInstaller, AppMarket; Bee Files, Bee Music, Gallery, DRM info, Google chrome, DLNA, and Settings.

All built-in applications work without any problems. From the AppMarket application, you can install the necessary programs, such as YouTubeTV.

The side menu of system settings consists of several subsections. In the first section, you can configure wireless or gigabit wired connection to the network, user accounts, and applications. In the device, settings are available settings for time, language and sound. Here you can also reset to factory settings.

In the Droid Settings section are more detailed system settings. Here you can set the desired screen resolution up to 4K 60GHz. Available settings profiles of color, image size and the option to control HDR (initially, the entire image, including the menu, is displayed in HDR ). Settings CEC-Control normally works in tandem with televisions that support this feature. In the audio settings, you can choose the type of audio output: PCM, SPDIF or automatic selection. It is noteworthy that True HD forwarding is not here. Also, there is no setting options auto-frame, respectively, this function does not work. In the future, this feature is likely to appear with the promised firmware update.

In the classic settings menu More Settings, in particular, there is a wireless update of the system.

Out of the box is available about 56 GB of internal memory, which can be used to store the necessary files. The console has 4GB of DDR4LP memory, which is more than enough to perform any tasks. On average, about 23% of the volume is used.

System. Testing

Works prefix operating system Android 9 Pie (32 bit). The new six-core Amlogic S922X chipset, which replaced the current S912, has four ARM Cortex-A73 cores capable of reaching 1.8 GHz with 1 MB of second-level cache memory and 2 low-power Cortex-A53 cores with 256 KB second level memory, the theoretical maximum speed is 1.9 GHz. The cores are made up of 12 nm technology, which gives improvements in performance by reducing energy consumption and heat dissipation.

The GPU Mali-G52 MP6 with a maximum frequency of 850 MHz and a performance of up to 6.8 Gbps (2.6 Gpiks in the Mali-820 on the SoC Amlogic S912) is used as the graphics processor. It is made on 16 nm technology and in general, greatly exceeds the previous Mali-T820 MP3 in performance. As a video processor, use the VPU  Advanced Video Engine Gen10, which supports h.265  and  VP9 codecs compatible with HDR, Dolby Vision, Advanced HDR10, HDR10 +, HLG, PRIME HDR and support for REC709 / BT2020 profiles. This system allows you to easily play videos with resolutions up to UHD 4K @ 75fps thanks to HDMI video output 2.1.

Beelink GT-King is a typical configuration without certificates, which are used to protect copyright content (in the services of Netflix, Disney, Amazon Video, BBC, HBO, Facebook, Hulu, Spotify, etc.), with the exception of the certificate of the lowest level Google Widevine L1. It is worth noting that Widevine L3 is the weakest level of protection from Google. Most often they work with it to distribute low-quality media content (below 1080p).

The good news is that Beelink GT-King out of the box has ROOT access to the system. This provides great opportunities for customization of software.

The speed of the RAM and internal memory: the results are quite good:

  • The speed of the RAM:  2076.66 MB / s
  • The speed of the internal memory: Reading:  124,09 MB / s  Write:  110,57 MB / s
  • USB port speed: Read:  407.32 Mb / s  Write:  2.82 Mb / s

All results of synthetic tests are collected in our comparative table:

Watching the performance tests, we see how the console with the SoC Amlogic S922X surpasses almost all models, including the powerful RK3399. In the benchmark performance of Antutu, Beelink GT – King scored 107,752 points!

At the moment, Amlogic S922X loses in performance only the Nvidia Shield SoC, which remains absolutely unbeatable for many years.

Test network capabilities

Beelink GT – King supports gigabit wired network connection and a wireless connection according to WiFi, which module operates in two ranges of 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz with internal antennas. Testing has shown very good results. When connecting to the Internet for all three types of connections, Speedtest shows the maximum speed that the provider gives – up to 90 Mbit / s (both download and upload), while ping – 1-2 MS.

The maximum bandwidth results achieved on this set-top box are quite impressive – when connected via WiFi in the 5 GHz band – 230 Mbps, and when connected via a gigabit wired connection – up to 800 Mbps.

Heat

Processor temperature is a very important indicator on which the reliability and stability of the system depend. The temperature values for various applications you can see on our screenshots above. On average, the processor temperature when the console is operating normally ranges from 50º to 65º?. At maximum load, testing or in 3D games, the temperature reaches 73º?.

Cpu Throttling Test, based on the results of a standard 15-minute test, showed that the processor gradually reduces core frequencies to 78% during operation. At the same time, the chip temperature was 65º?. The fact is that the heat transferred from the processor through the metal screen and the sponge to the aluminum plate does not have access to the outside since there are no ventilation diffusers. Therefore, after the plate has heated up – there is nowhere to put the heat, throttling begins. But keep in mind that this test loads all processor cores up to 100%, which is unlikely in principle during normal console operation. Therefore, with the usual use of the set-top box – watching videos and games, there will be no problems with overheating. But if you decide to use the console as a game console (and thus it can easily), then it makes sense to think about upgrading the cooling of the processor. The most effective will be to replace that strange “cake” from the screen and the sponge with something one, for example, a copper plate. A positive result will be even if you just completely remove the screen from the chips, which are not tightly pressed against them. You should not spoil the appearance of the console with drilled holes.

View video

Antutu Video test showed that the console was able to play almost all formats, only one unsupported codec. TV Box reproduces movies with a resolution of 480p, 720p and 1080p (24 frames per second, 30 frames per second and 60 frames per second), as well as 4K (60 frames per second) with various video codecs such as H.264 , H.265 ,  MPEG2, MPEG4, RMVB and audio – DTS and AC3. Dolby Digital 5.1 works fine via HDMI. In addition, we tested several video formats – AVI, MKV, MP4 (the typical formats in which it stores most movies), ISO, as well as videos that were played without problems.

We also tested the reproduction of a series of test videos with different codecs and bitrate:

Original-HD-Club-4K-Chimei-Inn-60MBit.mp4 Ok
01-CRF-19-ultrafast-HD-Club-4K-Chimei-Inn.mp4 Ok
4K HD.Club Changhong-Discover_the_true_Sichuan-HEVC.mp4 Ok
4K HD.Club Changhong-Furano-HEVC.mp4 Ok
Hubble Realms of Light (in 4k UHD) .mp4 Ok
LG Chess 4K Demo.mp4 Ok
Sony 4K – Camp HDR MP4 / HEVC 10bit – 75.8Mbps Ok
Jellyfish 4k UHD HEVC 10bit – 200/250/300/ 400 Mbps Ok
LG Demo – Istanbul 3840 × 2160 MP4 / H264 8bit – 116Mbps Ok
Sony 4K – Camp HDR MP4 / HEVC 10bit – 75.8Mbps Ok
Demo Samsung 2014 – USA Road Trip TS / HEVC 10bit – 51.4Mbps Ok
4K Cars and Ships 3840 × 2160 Ok

You can make an unambiguous conclusion, the TV box Beelink GT – King plays the most difficult video files without any problems.

TV Box Beelink GT – King also copes with YouTube playback. Since the Youtube application was not originally installed in the console, we install it from AppMarket. Video is played in up to 4K 2160p format. The image goes smoothly and without jerks.

Additional applications

The popular On-line cinema HD Videobox works on the Beelink GT console – King is excellent, no problems arise.

The HD VideoBox + version paired with the  Ace Stream Engine or TorrServe allows you to take advantage of a very convenient torrent watching movies directly without prior download. Any selected video, including 4K, plays perfectly, no problems with the image and with the sound are not observed.

Playback of TV channels using IPTV technology was verified using the IPTV application and playlist. Everything works perfectly.

Games

In the gaming aspect, Beelink GT – King relies on the Mali-G52 MP6 GPU included in the SoC  Amlogic S922X. This model allows you to run most Android games without performance problems and good compatibility. Modern 3D games like  World of Tanks Blitz or  PUBG also go great at medium and high-performance settings. At WOT Blitz, you can even play at ultra-high graphics settings, despite the fact that this is quite a hard game for TV set-top boxes. The temperature in games is kept at an average of 70 degrees.

Results

The new Beelink GT-King is undoubtedly one of the most powerful Android set-top boxes currently available on the market (based on the benchmark Antutu). It has strong specifications based on the new Amlogic S922X SoC. TV-box copes with 4K video playback and works very well in games. A big advantage is a voice remote control with air mouse and microphone, which facilitates control. But according to many users, this remote is not very convenient, because of the flat buttons. TV box Beelink GT-King It has a huge potential that has yet to be uncovered but still requires some optimization and correction of minor errors. In the console with a price of more than $ 100, I would like to see a working (native) auto-frame, global voice search, direct True HD audio output, as well as the promised new user interface. There are also questions about CPU cooling. But given the fact that Beelink, one of not many, provides support from the manufacturer and periodically releases software updates with fixes, it is hoped that all problems will soon be fixed.

 Pros:
+ Very high system performance
+ Large volume of high-speed RAM and internal memory
+ Playback of any heavy videos without problems
+ Availability of lower navigation and top notification bar
+ High-speed Wi-Fi and Ethernet
+ Remote control with gyroscope and microphone
+ ROOT access out of the box
+ OTA updates
+ YouTube to 4K
+ 2 x USB 3.0 ports + 1 x USB 2.0
