The 8bitdo brand is a manufacturer of peripherals that for some time now is dedicated to making excellent controls and accessories, many of which take more than a little inspiration from the Nintendo controls. Over the years, we have seen excellent replicas, both from NES, Famicom, and SNES, all so well done that you will swear that they are the company’s own products. Now, the company is back with two controls that promise to be its best-achieved devices so far: The 8bitdo SF30 Pro and SN30 Pro.
The predecessors, NES30 and SNES30 of 8bitdo, were updated recently to support Switch, but both lacked key functions, such as motion and vibration control. Therefore, the company has launched the SN30 and the SF30 Pro, which solve this situation by adding dual analog levers, a start button, and a screen capture button. Although they are two different controls in appearance, they are practically the same, for that reason, this will be a review of both articles.
8Bitdo SF30 Pro and SN30 Pro: Design
If you want to go back to your childhood and remember how you played for hours on old consoles, but the Mini NES 2016 is not enough for you; just take a look at these controls to fill you with nostalgia and the best memories. This is due to its classic retro design of the 80s and 90s, which will give you the same touch and the same feeling of yesteryear. The appearance is almost the same, except for differences that we will highlight later. Also, its casing is made of ABS material, which is anti-scratch. As for its dimensions and weight, these are the following: 14.3 x 6.2 x 1.8cm and 111g, respectively.
If we talk about something specific, these controls are based on the iconic Super Nintendo and Super Famicom controls. In terms of their construction, these controls are an incredibly close combination to the originals, from a precise D-pad to the answer buttons. The big change with respect to its predecessors and the classic controls is the inclusion of the two flexible joysticks, which have forced a slight change of design in the front part of the controls. These really do not affect the functionality or the gameplay, but it improves it a lot.
Other considerable differences are the L and R buttons, which are thinner than usual and next to them we will have the ZL and ZR triggers, which are sculpted in such a way that the fingers rest instinctively on them. Finally, it has an ergonomic design that gives excellent grip and adjusts to the curvature of the fingers, avoiding sweating even if they are used for a long time. Definitely, arcade designs combined with modern technology.
Imagine you want to know what is the difference between the 8bitdo SF30 Pro and SN30 Pro? Well, you might notice it for yourselves, especially if you’re from the old school, but we’ll mention it anyway. The SF30 Pro is derived from the Super Famicom, so the colors of the Y, X, A and B buttons are: green for Y, blue for X, yellow for B and red for A. On the contrary, in the SN30 Pro (named for the Super Nintendo), the X and Y are pale lilac while the B and A are a more intense purple.
8Bitdo SF30 Pro and SN30 Pro: Features
The controls have quite a broad compatibility, which is: Android, Windows, Steam, Nintendo Switch and MacOS. More direct examples could be Xiaomi smartphones, Samsung, tablets, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, etc.
Something you may have noticed is that there are no cables involved, these commands work wirelessly using Bluetooth 4.0. However, if you do not want to worry about how to do it, you can always connect the controls to your PC, Mac or Android device through the USB cable (type C) provided, in fact, 2 players are allowed simultaneously. Yes, there is no USB functionality for the Nintendo Switch. In general, it has 4 work/input modes: X-input, D-input, Mac mode and Switch mode.
We do not know if it’s necessary to say it, but each control is analog and, in turn, come with 500mAh lithium-ion batteries that promise 16 hours of continuous play and are charged through a USB cable. On the other hand, the vibration is, worth the redundancy, vibrant, and in conjunction with the movement control, the built-in gyroscope and the triaxial accelerometer provide a more realistic gaming experience.
8Bitdo SF30 Pro and SN30 Pro: Functions
The 8bitdo SF30 Pro and SN30 Pro controls will work with your smartphone to play applications using a game device with real touch input. In fact, to make this experience more comfortable, you can purchase the clip that allows you to screw the remote to your mobile. These controls will definitely be the best to fight, shoot and drive cars.
It will allow you to download and update the firmware manually to synchronize it with your Nintendo Switch. But it is also updatable to support more devices or to expand its features, such as the turbo functions. Moreover, the largest number of functions will be found on the Nintendo Switch, where we will have a button to take photos and another to return to the Start menu. It even has rumble control and motion controls like Joy-Cons and Pro Controller. Therefore, they can easily serve as a primary control for the Switch.
In general, the 8bitdo SF30 Pro and SN30 Pro are great controls for those who want an old-school design combined with modern functionality. The movement controls will work as expected, while an internal engine will provide some kind of force feedback to accompany the action on the screen. It’s not as subtle as the Nintendo HD Rumble, and maybe it will be a bit more cumbersome for those who are not used to it, but each one has its own mileage, so this may vary depending on the user.
