Smart bracelet products have been on the market for a long time, and their functions are becoming more and more advanced. Compared with smartwatches, bracelets are more portable and have longer battery life. They have become a must for sports enthusiasts, and they are more expensive than watches. more competitive. The Xiaomi bracelet product has been affirmed by the market since its inception, and it has also made the bracelet a necessity for many people’s lives. Probably the most successful fitness bracelet in the world is entering the next round. With the Xiaomi Mi Band 7, Xiaomi is once again doing some product maintenance and in view of the falling sales figures, this seems sorely needed.

Because since the Mi Band 4, the sales figures have been declining somewhat. Xiaomi proudly announced 1 million sales after 24 days for the Mi Band 6, but the Mi Band 4 reached the same mark in just 8 days. However, Xiaomi did not fulfill the wish of many for GPS with the Mi Band 7 either, but you can now also pay in this country using NFC. We also got the Mi Band 7 (Not NFC Version) for review. Unboxing

Xiaomi Mi Band 7 Smart Bracelet Review

The product packaging continues Xiaomi’s consistent simplicity and style. The front of the box has the appearance of the Xiaomi Mi Band 7 in a large area, and in the upper left corner name of the product “XIAOMI Smart Band 7” is Printed. Some main selling points of bracelets are printed on the side.

The back side of the box introduces the product’s features and related parameter information. The features of the Xiaomi Mi Band 7 are as follows; retina-level AMOLED full screen, professional sleep tracking, 100+ exercise modes, professional exercise effect evaluation, rich theme dials, all-day blood oxygen saturation monitoring, Xiao Ai voice assistant, 50 meters depth Waterproof.

Open the box, and the contents inside are sealed in individual packaging. The body of the Xiaomi Mi Band 7 is individually packaged in a plastic bag, and the plastic bag is printed with a graphic introduction of “connect the charger to turn on for the first time”.

Take out all the items in the box, and the list of the packing list is as follows: the main body of the Xiaomi Mi Band 7*1, the wristband*1, the charging cable*1, the instruction manual (including the three-pack certificate)*1.

Design

The overall appearance of the Mi Band 7 is at a glance. The Mi Band 7 maintains the consistent family-style design of the Mi Band series. The strap supports independent replacement, and the center is a display screen designed for “ring runway”.

Compared with the previous generation, the display of the Xiaomi Mi Band 7 has been upgraded. The screen has been upgraded from 1.56 inches to 1.62 inches, and the resolution has also been upgraded from 152×486 to 192×490. The fineness of the screen has not decreased, and it still remains at 326ppi. , the screen brightness has also increased from the previous generation’s maximum 450nits to a maximum of 500nits.

The side view of Xiaomi Mi Band 7, the overall flat design, and the sensor module protrude from the back.

In terms of straps, Xiaomi Mi Band 7 still continues the family-style design strap, using TPU material and adding a silver glass carrier antibacterial agent, the antibacterial rate of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus exceeds 99%. Compared with Mi Band 6, although the outer shape of the strap is similar, on the inner side of the strap, Mi Band 7 has a new groove design to improve the flow rate of air and sweat and avoid various problems caused by heat and humidity.

Close-up of the buckle used to secure the strap. Mushroom-style design, it can be worn securely by pressing lightly when wearing.

The back of the Mi Band 7 is at a glance. The back design is simple. In the middle are various sensors for monitoring the human body, and at the bottom are the metal contacts for charging.

A close-up of the sensor module on the back is used to detect various functions such as blood oxygen and breathing.

The USB charger adopts a magnetic design, with a USB A interface on one side and a custom magnetic charging interface on the other side. Like the previous generation, it can be charged without removing the body of the handle from the strap.

The appearance of the magnetic charging interface of the Mi Band 7 charging cable is basically the same as that of the Xiaomi Band 6 charging cable, both of which use a matte black design, but the magnetic interface has changed from the original “MI” to “Xiaomi”.

The overall weight of the Xiaomi Mi Band 7 is about 25.5g, which is about half of the weight of the TWS earphone charging box, and there is almost no sense of weight when wearing it.

Display

When I first got the Xiaomi Mi Band 7 version, the most intuitive feeling to me was the change of the screen. This time, the screen of the Mi Band 7 still retains the design idea of the runway screen, and the size is enlarged to 1.62 inches, which is higher than the previous one. The viewing area of the new generation has increased by 25%, but the large screen has not affected the exquisiteness of its bracelet products but has improved the overall experience. This screen uses an AMOLED display with a pixel per inch of 326PPI, which is the level of a retina screen, which also allows a larger screen to have more pixel data, making the picture clearer and more realistic.

At the same time, the precise cutting technique allows the screen of Xiaomi Mi Band 7 to completely cover the core of the bracelet, effectively expanding the upper and lower viewing area of the screen. With the new size, the field of view on both sides is also larger, making it less bulky. The changes also have better visual effects. In the previous generation, the Xiaomi Mi Band canceled the buttons and adopted a full-screen touch mode, which also made the bracelet more fluent and easier to operate.

Another important innovation is support for the Always-On-Display function, which was not available in previous generations. Some dials were made specifically for the AOD mode. In order for the mode to appear, the bracelet needs to be updated out of the box. Actually, Always-On works on the bracelet only when the clock is displayed. For example, the Apple Watch can also be used with sports modes, but not on the Band 7. If you do not need the AOD function at all, you can turn it off in the settings.

Over 100 watch faces are integrated here, some of which can even be customized. An always-on screen now also finds its place, since the decision was made to use AMOLED display technology. This means that the watch face contains a reduced version and is active on standby (always on is also possible) and displays the time with few pixels.

Animated watch faces are now also supported. For example, you can find the round, brownish globe from the Xioami 11 Ultra Mars Super Wallpaper.

Due to the changes brought by the screen size, the Xiaomi Mi Band 7 has further improved the visual sense, so a new system and logic are needed to match it. The new version of the OS on the Mi Band 7 has optimized and upgraded the overall UI, and each icon has been redrawn, making the overall information display more intuitive and the amount of information on a single page larger. It is more obvious than in the past, only two application icons could be displayed on each screen, but now three icons can be put down, which also makes the shortcut function page carry more applications.

Xiaomi Mi Band 7 comes with a new chip, which should be better at processing data and graphics. With daily use, there were no significant changes in the speed of the bracelet. Subjectively, we can say that the new Mi Band works in much the same way as the Mi Band 6.

However, in fairness, it is worth noting that some users still notice the increased smoothness of the interface. Maybe it’s because of the chosen dial. By the way, there are really a lot of the latter in Mi Band 7. Moreover, some of the new options look more informative than those that were in the bracelets before.

Features of the Xiaomi Mi Band 7

Without wanting to anticipate too much, it can be stated in relation to the range of functions of the new Mi Band 7 that it is almost unchanged compared to the previous model. So we still have no GPS on board and the sensors used are unchanged. The pulse sensor on the underside of the tracker has made it possible to measure blood oxygen saturation in addition to 24-hour pulse measurement since the Mi Band 6. The latter can now also be measured continuously. This does not really mean that there is a fixed measurement interval, but different measurement times are set throughout the day

The bulk of the functionality continues to read as follows:

  • Pedometer
  • Sleep Tracking
  • 24-Hour Pulse Measurement
  • SpO2 Measurement (Blood Oxygen Saturation)
  • Stress Tracking
  • Breathing Training
  • PAI (Personal Activity Index)
  • Call, SMS, and App Notifications
  • Menstrual Cycle
  • Timer, Stopwatch, Alarm Clock
  • Camera Remote Shutter Release
  • Music Control

Of course, the Xiaomi Mi Band 7 can and should be used again to track activities. On the one hand, it is waterproof up to 5 ATMs and, on the other hand, over 100 sports are now available for tracking. The Mi Band 6 had to make do with only 30 sports. Probably the biggest innovation is the ability to reply to incoming notifications from messenger apps directly on the band.

Pairing and App

To connect to a smartphone, the new version uses Bluetooth 5.2 LE instead of Bluetooth 5.0 in the sixth generation, and the new bracelet works with devices based on Android 6.0 / iOS 10 and newer. A connection to the smartphone (a RedMagic 7 in my test) can be established via Bluetooth 5.2 BLE.

The operation of the Smart Band 7 has not changed much, which is obvious, since the predecessor could be handled very intuitively even last year. The Bluetooth 5.2 data communication standard is used to pair the smartphone with the Mi Fitness (formerly Xiaomi Wear) or Zepp Life from Huami  (formerly Mi Fit) applications. With the former, the region must be set to China in the initial settings of the application, this was not necessary with Zepp. I chose the Zepp Life app myself, so all other screenshots naturally refer to the use of Zepp Life.

There is still no specific name for the operating system of the Mi Band 7 and the basic functionalities of the OS have not actually changed (similar to the range of functions of the entire tracker). The OS ran stably in version 1.16.0.7 during my test. This version also has the English language ready right at the beginning, which is automatically adopted by the smartphone after the first pairing. So it doesn’t matter whether you buy the Chinese or global version of the Mi Band 7.

We still have a central watch face, which of course can be changed and adjusted. This was already the case with the previous models. From the watch face, a swipe down takes you to the notifications and a swipe up takes you directly to the main menu. A horizontal swipe takes you to the quick access feature. You can configure this completely yourself in the Zepp Life app under “Band settings – Define key combination”. The vertical main menu of the band can also be individually configured in the app under “Band Settings – Display Settings”. Of course, these are not real innovations, because all of this was already possible with the older Mi Bands.

The Zepp Life app replaces the Mi Fit app, but long-time Mi Fit users need not fear as the look and functionalities are almost unchanged. So you can find the four main pages “Home”, “Training”, “Friends” and “Profile”, which are actually self-explanatory in their naming. The start page provides an overview of all important tracked data. Of course, this page can be configured individually by the user and in the end, you only see what you really need. Finally, under “Profile” you will find access to the numerous setting options for the Mi Band itself. Here, for example, the entire health monitoring can be configured at many different points. But also the selection of different watch faces from the “Store” or the already mentioned configuration of the menus on the band can be made in this area.

Of course, this also includes the configuration option for notifications from smartphone apps. This can be set individually for each installed app and worked without any problems in my test when the band was connected to the smartphone. The vibration intensity for these notifications can also be adjusted. As part of the notifications, there is also a real innovation that some users had wished for in previous Mi Band versions. For notifications from messenger apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, or Facebook Messenger, is that you can now reply to an incoming message directly on the Xiaomi Mi Band 7. This is done via canned responses that can be selected directly on the tape. To do this, tap on the blue arrow in the notification and you will now be offered the following selection of answers:

  • I’m busy right now, We speak later.
  • In the meeting, I will call back later.
  • I’m pretty busy right now, please call me back later, thank you.
  • Thanks very much!
  • OK
  • Emoji (can be selected)

If you tap on “Emojis” in the selection, different emojis can be selected and sent directly to the sender of the message. I tried this new feature with WhatsApp notifications and it worked flawlessly. I don’t really use this feature, but I still think it’s good that Xiaomi has included this long-awaited feature.

Overall, the Xiaomi Mi Band 7 and the Zepp Life app continue to form a great team. The functionalities are well coordinated and the switch from Mi Fit to Zepp Life is not really difficult. Many functions can also be individually configured for the latest Mi Band, so there is actually nothing to complain about in terms of the operating system and the smartphone app. One can certainly highlight the new answer option to notifications directly on the band. Even if I don’t personally use this feature, it just makes the Mi Band 7 a little more “complete”.

Improved SpO2 Function and 120 Sports Modes

And here we come to the sports features of Xiaomi Mi Band 7. The new version supports 120 sports modes! It’s just a huge number. For comparison, Mi Band 6 at the start was able to track only 30 types of activities. Of the sports modes in Band 7, there are running, walking, Pilates, swimming (intelligent recognition of four swimming styles), cycling, skateboarding, training with iron, and much more. It seems that now the Xiaomi bracelet can track all types of activity in general.

Interestingly, the proprietary Mi Fitness app has competitive features. You can compare your sports performance (steps taken per day, calories burned, total activity time during the day) with those of your friends. If you took more steps in a day than a friend, here’s a digital medal for you. A trifle, but nice, as they say.

A new feature is the ability to track VO2 max (cardio endurance). VO2 max displays the maximum amount of oxygen that the human body is able to consume and process during physical exertion. The higher the score, the more resilient the athlete. Thus, Xiaomi Mi Band 7 is able to analyze your workouts in terms of the level of oxygen consumed in order to provide data on the required load in the exercises. But here it is important to understand that fitness trackers give only a rough estimate of the value of VO2 max.

In addition, the new bracelet is able to prevent excessive physical activity. Based on your EPOC (Excessive Post-Workout Oxygen Consumption) value calculated from the past seven days, the device makes recommendations for exercise intensity.

Xiaomi Mi Band 7 also provides recommendations for post-workout recovery. For example, if you have been lifting the bar for too long and intensively in the gym, then the bracelet will tell you that it would be nice to rest for 96 hours before the next workout. The bracelet also shows whether you are currently doing an aerobic or anaerobic workout.

Move on. The blood oxygen monitoring function was also in Mi Band 6. In the new version, blood oxygen monitoring has been improved: now the bracelet can continuously monitor the SpO2 level throughout the day, and if the oxygen level drops below 90%, the device will warn the user about this with a special vibration.

Xiaomi Mi Band 7 also has an all-day heart rate monitoring function (the bracelet will alert the user with vibration if the set heart rate threshold is exceeded), as well as sleep monitoring, stress level assessment, tracking menstrual cycles, displaying notifications, and controlling music and camera on a smartphone, as well as breathing training, Personal Activity Intelligence (PAI) physical activity analysis, and even support for voice assistants in the NFC version.

Battery

To promote the AOD function, Xiaomi increased the battery to 180 mAh. This is a very decent increase given the 125 mAh of the Mi Band 6. Xiaomi still speaks of a runtime of 14 days, but that could now also be realistic with the larger battery of the Xiaomi Mi Band 7. I’ve had a Mi Band 6 NFC on my arm since November last year and it has to be connected to the magnetic charging cable every 10 days. The battery life of a Mi Band is excellent, but of course, it depends heavily on the settings. If you activate everything, then you get just under a week with Band 6.

The Xiaomi Mi Band 7 has a built-in 180mAh battery, which can provide up to 14 days of battery life. It can also have 7 days of use time under heavy use. The interface shares the charger with the previous two generations. The included charger can be placed in different places of use and can be fully charged in 2 hours anytime, anywhere.

Our Verdict

Summing up, we can say that Xiaomi has again released a functional and inexpensive fitness bracelet. The Xiaomi Mi Band 7 has a fairly large and bright screen, good autonomy, a 24-hour SpO2 monitoring function, and other features for tracking physical activity.

But do you need to change your Mi Band 6 to the “seven”? Most users need not rush – the devices do not differ so much. However, if it is important for you that the bracelet recognizes more than 100 activities, or if you want to constantly monitor the SpO2 level, then you still have to update.

But owners of older Mi Bands should seriously consider buying. Compared to the fifth or fourth generation, the new bracelet will be able to offer many interesting features that simply did not exist before.
