POCO M4 Pro Hands-on Review and first impressions

We were allowed to put the Poco M4 Pro into operation a week before the launch. In this article, I share my first impressions with you. A detailed test will follow in the next few weeks. As is so often, the Chinese market is used, and the template for the M4 Pro is the Redmi Note 11 5G ( announcement for China ). There are only differences in the software and the supported network frequencies. Let’s take a look at my impressions after a week of use.

Specs of POCO M4 Pro:

You can hardly complain about the scope of delivery because, in addition to the smartphone in the desired color, a 33W fast charging power supply, a USB-A to USB-C cable, and a neat protective cover are included in the package. The box in yellow is typical of Poco, and attempts have been made to mention 5G as often as possible.

Design:

The sticker with the CE symbol and the IMEI on the back, unfortunately, leaves adhesive residue. I find that quite annoying, and you have to remove the leftovers from the back first. Once that is done, the POCO logo and “DESIGNED BY POCO” lettering greets you. The fact that the design comes from the Xiaomi Redmi Note 11 has probably been forgotten. Or you refer to the black extension of the camera module on the Poco M4 Pro.

A little anecdote: The scope of delivery also includes various stickers with the Poco logo and lettering with “Everything you need, nothing you don’t”. I can hardly imagine that anyone needs this “Designed by Poco” lettering. Now enough with the “Rant”, let’s take a closer look at the Poco M4 Pro.

Display:

With its 6.6-inch IPS display, the Poco M4 Pro measures 163.6 x 75.8 x 8.8 millimeters. This makes it a large smartphone and, with a weight of 195 grams, not a lightweight either. Since I’ve just switched from an Asus Zenfone 8 Flip, I still find the device light and handy. I’ll be brief about the display. With the 90Hz option, most content appears much more fluid, and the resolution of 2400 x 1080 pixels ensures perfect sharpness. The 340 lux brightness in manual mode is now not much, and automatically, it is boosted to 380 lux. In practice, however, the legibility is still sufficient. The display glass is protected by Gorilla Glass 3.

The missing notification LED is always a bit of a problem with an IPS display but has now become the standard. Otherwise, of course, the Poco M4 Pro has a USB-C port, even stereo speakers, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Despite the plastic, there is nothing to complain about in terms of workmanship.

Performance:

The Poco M4 Pro comes with the brand new Mediatek Dimensity 810. The processor delivers adequate performance for the price range and is a slightly higher clocked Dimensity 700 chipset. This results in somewhat higher benchmark results.

The SoC is also manufactured using the more economical 6-nanometer process. However, the chipset cannot keep up with the performance of a Poco X3 Pro. This is a bit surprising since the starting price of Poco with 179 € for the version with 4 + 64GB is not without it. 20 € more are then for the larger version with 6 + 128GB storage. The LPDDR4X RAM brings it to a fast 28GB / s, and the internal UFS 2.2 memory delivers a read/write rate of a solid 977/484 MB / s. In 90Hz mode, the MIUI 12.5 system (with Poco Launcher) of the Poco M4 Pro is always smooth.

The Poco M4 Pro whizzes through the system; there is also enough power for moderate gaming. Call of Duty or PubG is always playable, although not a pleasure. The performance is just about appropriate for the price. But it’s better not to look at the in-house Poco X3 Pro, which is on sale for € 189. For the memory, also note that it can only be expanded with a micro SD if dual SIM is dispensed with (hybrid slot).

POCO M4 Pro Camera:

Unfortunately, I cannot speak of an upgrade for the camera of the Poco M4 Pro. The Samsung JN1, 50-megapixel sensor, doesn’t knock me off my feet here either. I’ve already been on tour with the camera, and here are my first snapshots. Let me know in the comments if that’s enough for you for € 180. The front camera is a 16-megapixel sensor (OmniVision OV16A10) and has made a good impression so far. And the 8 megapixels Sony IMX355 ultra-wide-angle camera is also neat.

I also find no 4K option for the primary camera somehow a shame for videos. After all, 1080p is reliably stabilized with all cameras (including the front camera).

Connectivity:

I have a problem with the Poco M4 Pro when it comes to WiFi reception. Because the device only connects to my network (FritzBox) with WiFi 4. WiFi 5 and thus dual-band is supported, however. Anyone who thinks now that this has no effect in practice is unfortunately wrong. WiFi 4 is simply ancient and limits me further away from the router to 10 Mbit / s on my gigabit line. So here, Xiaomi has to make improvements quickly because that annoys a lot when downloading apps.

MediaTek Dimensity 810

The SAR value is 0.594 W / kg (head) and 1 W / kg (body). The reception is noticeably strong, and the data throughput in the 4G and 5G networks is excellent. The Poco M4 Pro supports the following network frequencies:

4G: 1/2/3/4/5/7/8/12/17/20/28/32/66

5G: 1/3/5/7/8/20/28/38/40/41/66/77/78

This means that you are well-positioned in Germany and Europe and also well prepared for 5G. Standards such as VoLTE and VoWiFi can also be used without any problems.

You can also look forward to the 3.5mm headphone jack and the FM radio app. NFC for mobile payments is also on board, and Bluetooth version 5.1 (also works without problems with my VW car radio). Otherwise, the three standard sensors (acceleration, brightness, and proximity sensors), a gyroscope, and an infrared transmitter. Of course, Poco has also thought of the compass. The GPS reception is solid, and there were no problems with the navigation in the car or as a pedestrian.

POCO M4 Pro Battery:

The excellent battery life of the predecessor is retained, and the charging speed is almost doubled. The device is fully charged again in 70 minutes. In practice, you get at least 1.5 days with intensive use. For example, one hour of YouTube consumes only 6% of the battery.
