2019 A95X F3 TV box Amlogic S905X3 Review

Today in the review I propose to consider the inexpensive A95X F3 TV box on the SoC Amlogic S905X3.

The A95X F3 TV box is based on the Amlogic S905X3 SoC (system on a chip) released in 2019.
In essence, the Amlogic S905X3 is an upgraded version of the S905X2.
The differences lie in the use of four more productive, energy-efficient ARM Cortex-A55 cores versus Cortex-A53 cores in the S905X2. The S905X3 has a Neural Processing Unit (NPU) / Neural Network Accelerator (NNA), which provides better support for voice command processing.

The complete remote control works through the IR channel. The case is made of plastic. Rubber buttons are pressed clearly, with a soft click. Appearance

The housing of the A95X F3 TV Box is made of plastic. The side faces and the overlay on the top cover are glossy, the rest of the matte.
Case dimensions: (L x W x H): 10.40 x 10.40 x 1.94 cm. Weight 150 g.
The name of the model is marked on the top cover and an adjustable RGB backlight unit is located. A small number of ventilation holes are made on the bottom of the case; the device’s design variant and its MAC address are indicated.

Indication of the operating modes of the TV box occurs with the help of a seven-segment indicator, which is located behind the front panel and customizable RGB backlight.
During operation of the A95X F3 TV Box, the indicator shows the time and type of network connection.
When the device is turned off, only the power icon is displayed, there is no time indication.
In the photo it seems that the indicator shines brightly, but in fact it shines at an average level, the color is more blue. In the dark, the eye does not bother.
Standby RGB backlight can be turned off.

RGB backlight is configured using a preinstalled application. There are a large number of color settings, display speed and backlight brightness, depending on the operating mode. It looks interesting and impressive, but I turned off the RGB backlight in all modes, since it bothers me in the dark.

The TV box is equipped with the following set of connectors:

– on the back side: analog AV audio / video output, optical S / PDIF connector, Ethernet RJ45, HDMI, power connector.

Operating System:

A95X F3 runs on Android 9, with the ability to enable Root access.
After switching on, you need to perform the initial setup of the TV box. Set the interface language (Russian is present), time, time zone and network connection.

After setting up the tv box immediately notified of the availability of software version updates. The assembly A95X_F3_M-9.0.0-201910171654 was originally installed. The version in the update is A95X_F3_M-9.0.0-201911251551.

After the first power-up, about 2.3 GB of RAM and 27 GB of internal flash memory are available.

Launcher desktop is made in the form of application tiles. It can be seen that the developers tried to make it in the style of Android TV. At the top of the desktop there is a voice search button, under the application tiles are the icons of the settings menu, applications menu and network settings.

Using the mouse swipe from the bottom of the screen, you can call up the status bar and navigation bar. The status bar displays notifications, but when you try to expand them, nothing happens. Another flaw in the status line is the dual network connection icons.
The navigation bar works flawlessly.
A very large cursor rushed into my eyes.
Due to the presence of Root rights and inquisitive minds, you can change the size and type of cursor and activate the notification curtain.

To control the RGB backlight, the Color LED Settings application is installed. In the application, you can select the mode, brightness and speed of the backlight for the main operating modes of the device.

In the “Advanced Settings” screen, sound, playback, HDMI CEC, and device behavior when you press the on / off button are available. Autoframerate (HDMI selfadaptation) settings are missing.
From useful – in “Advanced Settings” you can enable Root access and there is the ability to configure or disable noise reduction.

Drive Speed

RAM and Falsh memory, which are implemented in the A95X F3 TV Box in one eMCP chip, showed low speed. The speed of RAM at the level of other budget TV boxes, the internal memory is slow.
When compared with budget TV-boxes, in which faster memory is installed, with everyday use, I did not notice a noticeable difference in work. The shell and programs work pretty fast.

Network interface speed

For the operation of network interfaces in the A95X F3 are responsible:
WiFi / Bluetooth – dual-band IEEE 802.11 a / b / g / n / ac Wi-Fi / Bluetooth 4.2 module based on the MTK6288RSN chip with support for MIMO 2×2;
LAN – 100Mbps integrated controller in SoC;

Measurement of speed was carried out in the multiplatform utility iPerf3. The router is located at a distance of about 7m from the TV box. Despite the implementation of antennas in the form of tracks on the board, the TV box confidently receives a signal. If necessary, you can install external antennas. On the board there are platforms for their connection.
The results are as follows:
WiFi 2.4 GHz – 85 Mbps;
WiFi 5 GHz – 218 Mbps;
Ethernet – 94 Mbps.

Conclusion

A95X F3 TV Box is a budget TV box on the SoC Amlogic S905X3 that will cope well with tasks such as watching Youtube in 4K, watching online content and IPTV, watching UHD BDRip, BDRip, BD Remux videos, games, NES emulators, amplifying and distributing WiFi.
The TV box did not show high performance, but for everyday home use it will be more than enough.
In my opinion, manufacturers switched to Amlogic S905X3 to replace S905X2, but the potential of the new SoC has not yet been revealed.
In budget TV boxes, due to frequency limitations, for the sake of system stability, and savings on the type of memory, performance remains at the level of the previous generation SoC.

Of the advantages of the A95X F3 we can distinguish:

– appearance and build quality of the device;
– lack of overheating and throttling at maximum loads;
– the presence of Root rights;
– Fast WiFi adapter with support for MIMO 2×2;
– the presence of a branch on w3bsit3-dns.com, in which ATV firmware has already been laid out and many shortcomings in the factory firmware have been fixed;

the disadvantages include:

– lack of gigabit wired network support;
– minor flaws in the firmware, most of which are easy to fix.
