Xiaomi To Feature A True On-Screen Ultrasonic Fingerprint Technology in the Next Mi Smartphone!

The concept of using an on-screen fingerprint reader has been passing for years now but has never been implemented. The smartphone manufacturer from the Chinese land ‘Xiaomi’ came too close after integrating under-glass ultrasonic fingerprint technology in Mi 5s and Mi 6. But sadly, it was still limited to a unpressable home button. However, the on-screen ultrasonic fingerprint technology will not be a fantasy anymore. This is because Xiaomi is expecting to feature it in its upcoming Mi smartphone.

Although, Xiaomi has not officially announced which Mi smartphone will release first. Among the three future Mi phones including Xiaomi Mi Mix 2, Xiaomi Mi Note 3 and Xiaomi Mi 7, one will feature the ‘On-Screen Ultrasonic Fingerprint Technology.’

Unlike the under-glass fingerprint module, this technology will solely integrate on the display of the phone. The advantage of using this technology are numerous. First, the fingerprint module will be operatable on the display of the smartphone instead of being limited to the home button.

Moreover, if it’s an ultrasonic fingerprint module, it will work with wet hands and feature a high accuracy scanning. Plus, the technology of integrating a fingerprint reader under the display panel sounds cool, right?

With the help of this technology, a true bezel-less may also come in existence ranging from a body-to-screen ratio of 98% to a perfect 100%. That’s why this technology is much preferred to come with the rumored Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 or Mi Note 3.

On-Screen Ultrasonic Fingerprint Technology – Where’s the problem lies?

If a particular area is dedicated to the on-screen fingerprint module, then finding that location can sometimes be an awkward situation until or unless it’s marked. Similarly, making the whole screen operatable as the fingerprint reader is cooler and will resolve the issue. Still, it will give birth to some new problems like constant touch and scanning responses at the same time and more power utilization.

The screen already blends the display panel and the touch panel. Adding a fingerprint panel is difficult, time-consuming as well as expensive. Moreover, if the screen accidentally gets damaged, the on-screen fingerprint reader might also fail to work. Replacing the screen along with the technology can be way expensive than replacing a typical display.

  1. From an engineering view, this new technology will introduce too many un-tested questions. The screen section resrved for the finger-print reader wil be different from the other parts.

    Differences will include: light-wave transmission-reception (including UV & IR), heat resistance, possible color-changes, EMF tolerances & mechano-chemical deterioration. Intense pre-production tests will show these differences & tolerances. But will they be acceptable enough for the “average” consumer, for about two years of “average” use?
