OmniVision to announce its OV13880 and OV5880 camera sensors later this year

OmniVision, the world’s second largest smartphone camera sensor producer is gearing up to announce not one, but two camera sensors that will most likely be found in mobile devices starting from 2016. The first camera sensor coming from the company is OV13880, while the other one is OV5880. Judging from the names of both sensors, OV13880 has a maximum image capturing resolution of 13MP, while OV5880 has a maximum image capturing resolution of 5MP.

OV13880 will sport the following specifications:

  • 1/2.4″ 13MP Stacked PureCel-S Sensor
  • 4-micron Pixels, 1/2.4″ sensor size (same size as other 21MP 1.12-micron sensors)
  • PDAF + 240Hz two-dimensional contrast AF
  • Buried Color Filter Array (similar to Samsung’s ISOCELL technology)
  • Capable of recording 4K videos at 60 FPS, along with recording 1080p vides at 240 FPS (this will help to edit slow motion videos)
  • OmniVision Clear Pixel 2.0 technology (Red-Clear-Blue-Clear Color Filter Array)

As for OV5880, this camera sensor will have the following specifications:

  • 1/4″ 5MP Stacked PureCel-S Sensor
  • 4-micron Pixels, 1/4″ sensor size (same size as other 8MP 1.12-micron sensors)
  • PDAF + 120Hz two-dimensional contrast AF
  • Buried Color Filter Array (similar to Samsung’s ISOCELL technology)
  • Capable of recording UHD or 1440p videos at 60 FPS, along with recording 1080p vides at 120 FPS (this will help to edit slow motion videos)
  • Optional EIS when capturing photos/videos in 16:9 instead of 4:3
  • OmniVision Clear Pixel 2.0 technology (Red-Clear-Blue-Clear Color Filter Array)

While both camera sensors are nothing short of impressive, OmniVision has given no extra details as to what exact timeline, or which smartphones will be fitted with these sensors. However, what we do know is that mass production of both OV13880 and OV5880 will commence from next year, meaning that smartphones featuring these impressive image snappers could be seen as early as H2, 2015.

After OmniVision shareholders let the company get acquired by a Chinese firm called Hua Capital Management, we suspect that more and more Chinese smartphones will be sporting the company’s high performing camera sensors. We will be publishing more updates for you in the future so stay tuned.
