Xiaomi Unveils New Router With Built-In 6 TB Hard Disk

Xiaomi has been doing the unexpected of late. Just when you would have expected the smartphone giant to try and expand to broader international markets with products they know about and have experience in developing, manufacturing and marketing, the company surprised us yesterday by launching smart air conditioners co-developed with appliance maker Midea. Earlier today, at Xiaomi’s conference held in Beijing, the founder and CEO Mr. Lei Jun unveiled yet another unexpected product. That new product is a new Wi-Fi router called Mi Wi-Fi with a built-in hard disk and two external antennas.

The router has been launched in two different hard disk capacities. The mainstream variant comes with 1TB storage, whereas the higher-end variant comes with an eye-popping 6TB capacity. While mentioning the 6TB hard drive, Mr. Lei joked it would be enough for a lifetime of data. The router meanwhile, can be synced with smartphones, as it supports both Android and iOS. Images or videos shot on your phone can automatically be uploaded to the router via an Android or iOS app and users will be able to access content stored on the router’s storage from anywhere and at anytime. The router is also compatible with cameras from multiple manufacturers including, but not limited to, Sony, Nikon and Canon among others. The newly released router also supports supports dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi standard, and is powered by a Broadcom 4709c dual-core chipset, clocked at 1.4GHz. The router also comes with 512MB of flash memory. In addition to the router, Xiaomi also launched the Mi Wi-Fi Amplifier, which can be plugged into the router to expand the Wi-Fi range.

As for the pricing, the 1TB variant has been priced at 699 Yuan ($115), while the variant with the 6TB hard drive is priced at 2,999 Yuan ($50). The Mi Wi-Fi Amplifier meanwhile, has been priced at 39 Yuan ($6.50).
