1MORE Spearhead VRX Review: Ultimate e-Sports Headgear

Recently, the e-sports community has been buzzing and really lively. For the past decade or so, e-sports have been rising in popularity especially because of games like Dota and League of Legends. When the professionals play these games, the equipment, and accessories they use are automatically endorsed. One such recently launched item that made its way into the spotlight is the 1MORE Spearhead VRX headphones.

The importance of high sound quality can’t be understated, and is one of the best ways to boost your gaming experience – not everything is about pretty graphics.

Even the best gaming monitors don’t always come with inbuilt speakers and the ones that are usually don’t feature pristine audio fidelity. If you’re looking for great sound while playing the best PC games, then you need either the best computer speakers or the best gaming headsets to hear all those immersive background noises, sound effects and dialog as clearly as possible.

A good set of computer speakers can be expensive and take up more space than you actually have, so our general advice here is to just skip all that hassle and just go for one of the best gaming headsets – they sound great, and they’re easily stored too.

For the money, the best gaming headset will give you all the bells and whistles of a pair of speakers, but with one key difference: privacy. For those keen on letting their roommates sleep at night, here’s a collection of gaming headsets that we’ve methodically tested and ranked for your reading pleasure below.

1MORE Spearhead VRX: Design and Appearance

When we received the package, we were pleasantly surprised by the packaging. The company had decided to keep the outer packaging black and red much like the 1MORE Spearhead VRX headphones predecessor. The company did not adopt the cheap route in terms of packaging. Like any other high-end pair of headphones, the packaging is solid and tough. The box is made out of a hard cardboard material with a smooth matte finish. On the front of the box is a picture of the actual product and on the back are some of the features and specs of the 1MORE Spearhead VRX headphones.

The front of the box opens up like a lid to reveal the headphones fit snuggly inside a plastic material. When we removed the 1MORE Spearhead VRX headphones from the box, we found all the related accessories such as the 1MORE storage bag, USB cable, 3.5mm audio cable, manual and 1MORE unique Bear sticker.

The headphone boasts a steel headband. To reduce the weight of the headphones on the wearers head, the Spearhead VRX features a “head beam + headband” double-layer design. The hollow head beam greatly reduces the weight of the body. The adaptive headband can automatically adapt to the wearer’s head shape, eliminating the need to adjust the size of the body. The two are designed to give the wearer a sense of weight and comfort. But other than that, the majority of the headphone is made of plastic.

1MORE has also made a lot of efforts to improve the wearing comfort. For example, Spearhead VRX’s 360° all-round earmuffs can be rotated at multiple angles to suit different head types. In addition, one of the changes in 1MORE Spearhead VRX compared to the previous generation was that the material of the earmuffs was changed from cotton to PU leather, which is softer when worn.

The use of plastics also means we get annoying microphonics – mechanical sounds like taps, creaks, and cable noise are all transmitted through the 1MORE Spearhead VRX headphone. Simply moving your head will result in hearing the cable scrape against your shirt. Tapping on the ear cups also creates a hollow sound that reverberates in the acoustic chamber for several seconds. This is absolutely maddening if small extraneous sounds bother you.

Controls for the 1MORE Spearhead VR can be found on the right cup with a slider to toggle the noise canceling mic on and off, as well as a volume wheel that can also change the amount of bass on the fly by depressing and rotating the wheel. In terms of connectivity, the Spearhead VRX connects to your PC via a micro USB cable but 1MORE includes a nice 3.5mm cable so you can use the headphones with other devices on the go.

The driver software of 1MORE Spearhead VRX is not the “Spearhead VRX” like in the previous generation, but the “H1006VRX DRIVER”. You can download it from the official website of 1MORE. After installing it, you can find that the interface of the software is significantly different from the previous one. The volume, microphone, and shock intensity are designed to be the wheel gauge control interface. Below the interface are the settings for “head detection”, “light settings”, “equalizer settings”, etc. that can be found in the submenu settings.

With all EQ and DSP turned off, the 1MORE Spearhead VRX offer balanced, spacious sound: Bass is tight and controlled, and highs ever so slightly rolled off, and mids are solid with the bass only bleeding into the mids if you crank up the bass EQ or DSP. In short, these headphones will serve those looking for a headphone that is good for both gaming and music.

However, annoyingly, there’s a soft but still audible hiss from the headset when no music is playing, which isn’t a big deal but will drive audiophiles bonkers.

1MORE Spearhead VRX

Turn all of the various 3D effects on, the sound quality gets noticeably more artificial sounding on the 1MORE Spearhead VRX. Namely, the software tries to create a sense of space around your head but resolution takes a dive. You’ll hear enemy footsteps just fine but you’ll want to disable the virtual surround sound DSP settings when listening to music, which you can do inside the app. What we’d like to see 1MORE do is create shortcuts so that gamers can quickly switch sound profiles with a keyboard shortcut instead of having to launch the app and toggle presets.

The comfort of the 1MORE Spearhead VRX – which is extremely important for gaming headphones – is just average. The quick-adjusting headband is nice but there’s slightly more clamping pressure that we would have liked. Additionally, our ears started getting steamy during extended gaming sessions even though the Spearhead VR features perforated ear pads.

1MORE Spearhead VRX

One highlight of the 1MORE Spearhead VRX is its noise-canceling microphones, which made our voice communications come across loud and clear in multiplayer games and calls.

The 1MORE Spearhead VR is an impressive first attempt by the company at crafting a gaming headset that also excels at music. Sound quality is a highlight as the Spearhead VRX are more than capable of performing dual duty as music and gaming headphones. However, be sure to turn off any of the fancy virtual surround settings if you want to listen to your tunes without messing up the balance of the original recording.

While the sound quality impressed us, build quality could use some work. The headphones boast a steel headband and metal ear cup pivots but the rest of the headphone is made of plastic that creaks and groans when flexed. The problem is made worse by the annoying microphonics, which means you’ll hear a lot of cable noise when the micro USB cable slides across your clothing.

Against the competition, the 1MORE Spearhead VRX is an undeniable value for all of its features.
