WinkPax G1 Review: 8-inch Android Tablet With A GamePad Attached

We have reviewed myriads of tablets at different screen size, running various operating systems, sporting different features and costing differently. But the one we are going to talk about today has nothing common with the rest of models. Meet the WinkPax G1 with a detachable gamepad attached. This factor makes us put the WinkPax G1 into another category. I mean this tablet can be considered as a gaming tablet. Though this is a new category (or maybe there is not anything like that), you don’t have to think on it incredulously, because the WinkPax G1 is great 8-inch tablet that can be used diversely.

Looking at the WinkPax G1 specs list we can make a few assumptions. First, it runs on an older version of Google’s mobile operating system. But what’s the worst I think there will be no OTA update. On the other hand, we don’t have to worry about the version of Android, because it’s a gaming tablet.

As for performance, this tablet sports a mid-range SoC, which means not all games can be played on it.

Third, as I said, this category of tablets is something new, and the manufacturers still don’t know what features are more important for gamers. For example, the WinkPax G1 supports 4G LTE. Probably, good connectivity options are required for online games.

Well, let’s jump to the next sections and find out whether this tablet is capable of providing good gaming performance.

WinkPax G1 Appearance

The WinkPax G1 comes with an irregular box content. I mean you can find many things lacking in other tablets packaging. The box includes the tablet, USB cable, HDMI cable, AC adapter with a few ports, gamepad, protective film, and the manual in English. The latter is very helpful when we start using the gamepad for the first time, as it mainly includes the definition of this or that part and button.

Let’s start the WinkPax G1 review from the back side. The central part is made of metal, while the aside panels are made of plastic. The rear camera at 13MP is located on the right side. It’s also paired with a flash light for better shooting experience. The speaker is placed on the opposite side, on the left. It’s a monaural speaker, by the way. We can even see the round holes on the both sides placed for connecting the gamepad.

The right side comes with a power button as well as volume rocker.

As you see, the top side carries the most ports including the 3.5mm audio jack, microUSB and mini HDMI ports. The blue metal frame is interrupted here.

Removing the top side cover we can see the microSIM card slot as well as microSD card slot.

The left side has no buttons. It’s blank.

The bottom side of the WinkPax G1 carries nothing but the microphone hole and it’s also looks identically to the opposite side.

The front panel carries an 8-inch IPS display at a resolution of 1200 x 1920 pixels supporting up to 10 points touch functionality.

However, being a gaming tablet the WinkPax G1 comes with an irregular body. Unlike other 8-inch tablets this one has an octagonal look. Probably it’s been made for better fit in the gamepad, which is a bit larger than expected.

If comparing with the XBOX controller we can see this one has an identical width, but it has a bigger if compared vertically.

WinkPax G1 Controller Review

The front side of the controller carries four buttons (LB, LT, RB, and RT) and a microUSB port, but it’s not used frequently, as this controller connects to the tablet via Bluetooth.

The back side comes with two switches designed for fixing the controller when connecting it to the tablet. Finally, there is a round button for locking the controller when unpacking and closing the pad.

WinkPax G1 Performance

The WinkPax G1 is known as a 3 in 1 game tablet. We are familiar with 2 in 1 tablets and know this term is used to describe the tablets turning into a laptop. The latest 2 in 1 tablet PC we reviewed was the Pipo W1 Pro. So you can check the article out in order to get familiar with the key features of such products. As for 3 in 1 tablets, I can’t remember even a single tablet from this category. Therefore, the WinkPax G1 will be the first one we get a closer look. Well, 3 in 1 tablet means we are dealing with a device that can be used as a regular tablet, it can be mounted into the controller and to be used as a gaming tablet, and finally, the controller can be used separately. But the manufacturer prefers another definition for the term of ‘3 in 1 tablet’: it is used for mobile gaming; the WinkPax G1 can be used to play XBOX games on TV; the tablet can be used to turn your TV into a Smart TV.

The WinkPax G1 tablet sports a MT8783 quad-core SoC coming with A53 architecture and running at 1.3GHz frequency. It’s paired with a 2GB of DDR3 RAM and 32GB of internal memory that can be expanded up to 128GB via TF card slot.

The tablet was tested and it scored 36,629 points at AnTuTu. It’s under 40,000, which is a bit disappointing. But the MediaTek MT8783 showcases better results than the Snapdragon 410. Obviously, we are dealing with a mid-range CPU, but probably the manufacturer puts emphasis on gaming.

The WinkPax G1 is a gaming tablet, and it’s more interesting to know how it acts in this sense. The tablet comes with no Google related apps or anything else. So everything you have to do yourself. There is not even an emulator. Unfortunately, there is no Google Play pre-installed, so the quickest way to download and install apps is using Amazon’s app store.

Anyway, once the ‘Real Racing 3’ was installed, we tried it out, and I have to say the WinkPax G1 provided quite acceptable gaming performance. Though Android 5.1 is enough for many games, some experienced mobile gamers recommended to use custom ROMs instead of Android.

Moreover, we are dealing with a Bluetooth controller, therefore it can be used separately from the tablet. Probably it will be more comfortable to play on. But this is a matter of taste.

The Verdict

The WinkPax G1 is available for $309.77, which is a great price tag if taking into account we are dealing with an 8-inch LTE-enabled tablet and a game controller at the same time. Moreover, this is a 3 in 1 tablet. Thus paying around $300 you acquire a device that can used in three different cases.

Probably, the most disappointing thing is the lack of Google apps, but as I said, it can be solved in different ways. But those who are not experienced users will face some difficulties.

Anyway, the key feature of the WinkPax G1 is the presence of the gamepad in the box. So you can use it as a Bluetooth controller whenever you need.
